UDC Researcher Ricardo García Mira Awarded the Title of Doctor Honoris Causa by the University of Buenos Aires

  • Following a proposal from the Faculty of Psychology of the University of Buenos Aires, the UDC professor will be invested as Doctor Honoris Causa by the Argentine academic institution.

    The University of Buenos Aires (UBA), one of the leading academic institutions in Latin America, has agreed to confer the title of Doctor Honoris Causa upon Professor Ricardo García Mira, Professor at the University of A Coruña and researcher at CITEEC, in recognition of his contribution to the development of social and environmental psychology and to the study of sustainability and the relationships between people and their environment.

    The decision was adopted by the Superior Council of the University of Buenos Aires during its session held on 10 June 2026. The formal investiture ceremony, at which Ricardo García Mira will officially receive the title of Doctor Honoris Causa, will take place next November at the headquarters of the Argentine institution.

    The granting of this highest academic distinction recognizes a career spanning more than three decades and an outstanding contribution to advancing knowledge on some of the most important contemporary social and environmental challenges. It also highlights the international dimension of a research and academic career aimed at strengthening the links between science, public policy, and society.

    Through this decision, the University of Buenos Aires includes Ricardo García Mira among the distinguished individuals who, from different fields of knowledge, have made exceptional contributions to scientific, cultural, and social progress, while at the same time strengthening academic ties between Europe and Latin America and promoting a vision of science committed to social transformation and sustainability.

    Recognition of an Outstanding Career

    Ricardo García Mira is Professor of Social and Environmental Psychology at the University of A Coruña. He has developed his academic and research career at this university, where he led the People-Environment Research Group. In addition, he has served as a visiting and honorary professor at several international institutions.

    He was elected Fellow of the International Association of Applied Psychology and served as President of the International Association for People-Environment Studies (IAPS), a leading international organization in the field of research on relationships between people and their environments.

    His research activity has focused on environmental psychology, sustainability, ecological transition, citizen participation, quality of life, and societal responses to climate change. Throughout his career, he has led and participated in numerous European and international projects related to sustainable lifestyles, social innovation, energy transition, and public policies for sustainability.

    Among other recent distinctions, García Mira was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iași (Romania, 2018); he has been Honorary Professor at the Institute for Policy Research of the University of Bath (United Kingdom, 2016–2027); he holds the Ching-Ching Hung-Dao Honorary Chair at National Tsing Hua University (Taiwan, 2026); and he has served as a visiting professor at various American and British universities.
