CITEEC once again took part in the Galician Night of Researchers (GNIGHT), an event held on 25 September that brought together a wide range of activities across different venues in A Coruña to make science and research more accessible to society.

Throughout the event, CITEEC brought part of its research activity to the Dársena de la Marina, where people of all ages had the opportunity to discover, experiment and learn more about some of the work carried out at the centre.

One of the activities was “Mini-CITEEC Takes to the Streets”, which allowed visitors to interact with scale models of some of the machines and equipment used in the centre’s laboratories. Through these demonstrations, technical and research staff explained different concepts related to civil engineering in a practical and accessible way.

The Construction Group (gCONS) took part with the workshop “Concrete for the Whole Family”, where participants could make their own mortar photo holders while learning about the properties of cement-based materials and some of the research areas related to their use.

Meanwhile, the Analytical Chemistry Group (QANAP) introduced visitors to various issues related to environmental pollution through simple experiments. The activity offered insights into how certain pollutants are studied and encouraged participants to reflect on their presence in our everyday surroundings.

The event also provided an opportunity to discover CITEEC from the inside through a guided tour of its facilities.Participants visited several research areas, including the Wind Tunnel, the Ports and Coastal Engineering Basin, the Hydraulics Laboratory and the Construction Laboratory. During the tour, they learned about some of the tests and demonstrations regularly carried out at the centre.

The programme concluded with two science outreach talks held at the Dársena de la Marina. Guillermo Lorenzo Gómez, a researcher with the Numerical Methods in Engineering Group (GMNI), presented advances in the development of mathematical models used to study tumour growth and treatment response, in a talk dedicated to digital twins of tumours.. Meanwhile, Yolanda Pérez Sánchez, a researcher with the Person-Environment Research Group (GRIPA), explored the relationship between visual culture, landscape and the ways in which we interpret and inhabit spaces in her talk “Landscapes Look Back at Us”.
