CITEEC to participate in the 2026 Galician Researchers’ Night

CITEEC is once again joining the Galician Researchers’ Night (GNIGHT), an event during which the university and its research centres open their doors and take to the streets to bring scientific knowledge closer to society.

In 2026, the event will take place on Friday, 25 September at Dársena da Mariña, as well as in bars and museums across the city. CITEEC will take part in this year’s edition with a range of science outreach activities for all audiences.

“Mini-CITEEC takes to the streets” workshop | Dársena da Mariña, 18:00–21:00

CITEEC’s technical and research staff will take the mini-CITEEC to the streets, a miniature display of the machines used at the centre. Participants will be able to interact with them, learn how they work and explore basic civil engineering concepts in a practical and fun way.

“Concrete for the whole family” workshop | Dársena da Mariña, 18:00–21:00

The Construction Group (gCONS) will show participants how to make their own mortar photo frames, while introducing them to cement-based materials, their main properties and advantages over other materials, as well as some of the current challenges associated with their use.

“Environmental pollution” workshop | Dársena da Mariña, 18:00–21:00

AThrough simple experiments carried out by the Analytical Chemistry Group (QANAP), this workshop will introduce the general public to various issues related to environmental pollution that are present in our everyday lives. Participants will discover how these issues are investigated and reflect on how we can help improve our surroundings.

Guided tour of CITEEC | CITEEC, Elviña Campus, 12:00–13:30

Participants will visit four of CITEEC’s laboratories and gain first-hand insight into the research activities carried out there. They will also have the opportunity to observe ongoing tests in real time or demonstrations using scale replicas of the testing machines specially prepared for the occasion.

The tour will include the Wind Tunnel, the Ports and Coastal Engineering Basin, the Hydraulics Laboratory and the Construction Laboratory.

Places on the guided tour are limited to 25 participants, and registration is required.

Talk “When Engineering Builds Health: Digital Twins of Tumors” | Dársena da Mariña, 8:10 p.m.

Researcher Guillermo Lorenzo Gómez, from the Numerical Methods in Engineering Group (GMNI), will provide an overview of advances in the personalised prediction of tumour growth and treatment response using mathematical models based on medical imaging and clinical biomarkers.

These models lay the foundations for the development of digital twins of cancer patients, which in the future could help optimise clinical management of the disease on a personalised basis, improving decision-making and potentially patient survival and quality of life.

Talk “Landscapes Look at Us” | Dársena da Mariña, 8:10 p.m.

Researcher Yolanda Pérez Sánchez, from the Person-Environment Research Group (GRIPA), will give an outreach talk on how visual culture shapes the way we look at, interpret and inhabit the landscape.
