ROAD AND GEOTECHNICAL LABORATORY

Road surface tests

The Road and Geotechnical Laboratory is equipped with high-performance equipment to carry out extensive testing of road pavements, in accordance with current regulations. The tests are based on the analysis of the mechanical and volumetric properties of bituminous mixtures, as well as on the analysis of the mechanical properties and rheological behaviour of bitumen, bituminous emulsions, bio-binders and different types of waste.

  • Characterisation of granular materials (optimum moisture content and maximum dry density according to Proctor testing, particle size distribution, density, water absorption, fracture surfaces, etc.)
  • Characterisation of binders (bitumen, bituminous emulsions, bio-binders, modified bitumen) in terms of their ring-and-ball softening point, penetration, rotational viscosity, DSR, BBR and ductility, both before and after ageing with RTFOT and/or PAV.
  • Characterisation of hot, semi-hot, warm and cold bituminous mixtures, gravel emulsions and cold-recycled materials. For this purpose, we have equipment to determine their resistance to permanent deformation (track test), cyclic and triaxial compression, stiffness and thermal susceptibility, fatigue resistance, volumetric properties and sensitivity to water, binder extraction, etc.
  • Cooper CRT-NU 14 servo-pneumatic universal system: this equipment can be used to quickly determine the stiffness modulus, permanent deformation and fatigue behaviour of bituminous mixtures using cylindrical samples taken from the road or prepared in the laboratory.
  • SERVOSIS ME-401/1 servo-hydraulic dynamic testing machine: it can obtain dynamic moduli and perform triaxial tests on bituminous mixtures.
  • IBERTEST multi-test static testing machine: it can perform indirect tensile tests following immersion and immersion-compression.
  • Marshall compactor, rotary compactor, plate compactor.
  • Wheel tracking test.
  • Automatic bitumen extractor.
  • Factory for the manufacture of emulsions and modified bitumen.
  • Different sets of equipment to study the behaviour of binders using the SUPERPAVE methodology: BBR, DSR, ductility tester, automatic penetrometer, automatic ring-and-ball tester, rotational viscometer, RTFOT, PAV, etc.
  • Equipment to apply electromagnetic induction to bituminous mixtures.
  • SATS equipment to assess aging by saturation of bituminous mixtures.
