Research & Innovation Centre on Civil Engineering and Building (CITEEC)

CITEEC, a research center at the University of A Coruña, specializes in R&D&I in civil engineering and construction, focusing on sustainability and innovation. Its main goal is to improve research and knowledge transfer, aligned with the RIS3 Strategy and the SDGs.

Established in 2000, CITEEC has 10 specialized laboratories on its facilities and four associated laboratories, making it one of the leading research centers in Spain and the only one of its kind in Galicia.

Since its inauguration in June 2000, a broad group of researchers have carried out their scientific and technical work at CITEEC, for whom the use of these facilities and equipment has been key and absolutely essential to achieve excellent results in their respective fields.

Career

On this basis, a first project was launched in 2017 to bring together the groups most closely linked to the centre, define an initial joint research agenda, and lay the foundations for a process of institutional development — all with the medium-term vision of becoming a centre of research excellence within the Galician University System. Thanks to its quality and potential, CITEEC was officially recognised by the Xunta de Galicia as a Strategic Research Group, receiving core funding for the period 2018–2020.

After this stage, efforts focused on moving towards consolidation as a research centre of the University of A Coruña (UDC), ultimately achieving recognition as a collaborative centre of excellence in the 2023 call for Research Centres of the Galician University System (CIGUS 2023). Building on the strength of this scientific team and equipped with technological infrastructure on par with the most advanced centres in the EU, CITEEC’s objectives focus on achieving a leading scientific position as a key pillar to enhance the competitiveness of strategic sectors linked to civil engineering and sustainable construction in Galicia, Spain, and Europe, generating social, environmental, and economic impact.

The Research & Innovation Centre on Civil Engineering and Building (CITEEC) is a research center at the University of A Coruña (UDC) specializing in R&D&I in many fields and sectors relevant to civil engineering and construction. Its purpose is to improve and intensify research and knowledge transfer in these sectors with a sustainable and innovative approach, based on experimental analysis with strong support from numerical analysis, and following the priorities of the RIS3 Strategy, the Spanish Science and Technology Strategy 2021-2027, the European Horizon Europe Strategy 2021-2027, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs, Agenda 2030).
