The Centre for Technological Innovation in Building and Civil Engineering (CITEEC) at the University of A Coruña and the Municipal School of Music of A Coruña (EMM) brought music, science and creativity together in the filming of the new music video by Starband, a group made up of students from the School and winners of the first edition of Torre67 Fest, the modern music competition organised by the EMM in March 2025.

The band, made up of Adriana Varela, Gabriel Crego, Lola de la Iglesia, Pablo Raso, Teresa Román, Uxía Díaz and Vera Arias, took part in the first edition of the competition with their version of David Bowie’s “Starman”. This was the first song the group rehearsed together, giving rise to the name Starband, as well as the song that earned them first prize at Torre67 Fest. As part of the recognition, the band was awarded the production of a music video and also represented the modern music department at the EMM Gala, held at the Teatro Colón in April 2025.

For the filming, CITEEC became a unique setting for music. The Wind Tunnels, the Ports and Coastal Engineering Basin, the Construction Laboratory and the Hydraulics Laboratory were among the locations used for the music video, making use of these spaces and their equipment to create different settings and visual effects. The audiovisual project was produced by Álvaro Díaz, who was responsible for filming and editing the music video. His professionalism and creativity were essential in shaping the project and bringing Starband’s identity, as well as the CITEEC spaces, to the screen.

The collaboration brings together two different fields that share common ground: experimentation, creativity and a desire to explore new ways of creating and communicating. The initiative offers an opportunity to bring CITEEC’s research facilities closer to the public from a different perspective while, at the same time, providing EMM students with a new context in which to develop their artistic project.

The choice of “Starman” also reflects the spirit of the project. David Bowie’s song conveys a message of hope and new possibilities for young people, an idea that the music video conveys through music and imagination, using the CITEEC spaces as part of the story.

In this way, the project brings culture, education, science and innovation into dialogue, with a music video in which the CITEEC spaces take on a new meaning through Starband’s music.
