abstract = {An efficient method for analyzing the nonlinear aerostatic stability of long-span bridges using a modal formulation is proposed. First, a simplified linear version defined as modal-based approach is introduced, which evaluates the bridge displacements using the modal properties of the bridge and speeds up the assessment of the critical velocity by applying a root-finding algorithm. Then, this scheme is further developed to identify the instability limit point in nonlinear structures by combining nonlinear FEM analyses with the linear version of the modal-based approach and a root-finding algorithm in an outer loop. The effects of considering the three components of the wind loads, the stays sag effect, structural nonlinearities, aerodynamic nonlinearities, and the initial wind angle of attack, are analyzed and discussed. The computational advantages of the proposed method and its accuracy are demonstrated through three application examples, including a simplified linear 1 DoF system, and linear and nonlinear FEM models of a full cable-stayed bridge. The collapse mechanism of the cable-stayed bridge is driven by the stiffness degradation of the stays caused by the deck vertical upward displacements. It has been found that the influence of the nonlinear aerodynamic features is very low when the structural nonlinearities control the bridge collapse.},

abstract = {Typical industry models for Offshore Wind Turbines with fixed substructures are based on decoupled models between the wind turbine and the substructure. It is proved that the complete dynamic response of the structure can only be captured with coupled models. In this paper a fully-coupled model for Offshore Wind Turbines with jacket support is presented. The computational model allows to obtain an accurate response of the whole structure and the dynamic interaction between all the elements. It also allows to reproduce particular effects such as the aerodynamic damping without the need for artificial damping ratios which would be needed in decoupled models. Typical environmental offshore conditions are integrated in the model and the response of the structure is obtained by means of a non-linear time integration algorithm in order to include the effect of the continuous rotation of the blades. A cost-efficient approach for the determination of fatigue-damage in the joints of the jackets is proposed. It is based on short-time simulations which allow to accurately estimate the long-term damage in general. The estimation shows a good agreement when compared to the damage values obtained by performing the whole time-interval simulation.},

abstract = {Dynamic analysis is an essential part of aircraft design and the behavior of structural components of aircraft systems needs to be evaluated undergoing time varying loads. This is done by creating Finite Elements (FE) models and carrying out dynamic analysis in the frequency or time domain. The first approach is faster but only can be used in linear theory, namely when all materials involved in the structural model have linear constitutive equations. But sometimes FE models of aircraft structures contain a small number of non-linearities usually localized in the connection points between the assembled components. In this paper an approach that allows to perform frequency analysis in structural models having several nonlinear springs is presented and its performance is compared with the results provided by time domain analysis methods. An application example that represents a quite realistic assembly between two fuselage sections and a real aircraft connection system are presented.},
