Santiago Hernández Ibáñez

Santiago Hernández Ibáñez is Professor Emeritus of Structural Engineering at the University of A Coruña (Spain), an Associate Fellow of the AIAA, and a Fellow of the ASCE and IABSE. He co-founded the aerodynamic wind tunnel and the boundary layer wind tunnel at his university and has written four books on structural optimization, aeroelasticity of bridges, and nonlinear continuum mechanics.

Professor Hernández has collaborated on aerospace vehicles with NASA and the ESA, as well as with Airbus on the A380, A350, A340, and A30X aircraft, focusing on nonlinear analysis, structural optimization, and dynamic analysis. He has been a visiting researcher at the University of Southampton (UK) and the University of California, Santa Barbara (USA).

He has conducted extensive studies on the aeroelastic behavior of numerous bridges in Europe and America, including the future world record-breaking suspension bridge over the Strait of Messina (Italy). His work on pedestrian bridges includes the use of innovative materials such as carbon fiber cables.

He has supervised 13 doctoral theses, given lectures and seminars in numerous countries, and has over five hundred publications in international journals and conferences. He is an expert in structural optimization, multidisciplinary reliability-based optimization, aeroelasticity, and nonlinear dynamics.
