Paulo Jorge de Sousa Cruz

Dr. Paulo Jorge de Sousa Cruz received his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Porto in 1987. He earned a Master’s degree in Structures from the University of Porto in 1991 and a Ph.D. in Construction Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia in Barcelona in 1995; he received his habilitation in Structures from the University of Minho in 2005.

Paulo Cruz has been a professor at the University of Minho since 1989, initially in the Department of Civil Engineering, which he headed in 2003 and 2004, and later in the School of Architecture, which he chaired from 2004 to 2011. Full professor of Construction and Technology at the School of Architecture since 2008. Vice Rector of Construction and Technology at the School of Architecture since 2008. Vice Rector for Quality of Life and Infrastructure at the University of Minho from 2017 to 2021.

Director of Lab2PT – Laboratory of Landscape, Heritage, and Territory (2015–2017). President of the UM-Cidades Platform (2016–2017) and of the Guimarães Design Institute since 2015. Vice President of the Landscape Laboratory since 2018.

Executive Director of the City of Guimarães Foundation (2011–2013), an institution whose primary objectives were the planning and development of the cultural program for the European Capital of Culture – Guimarães 2012.

Founder and President of the International Association of Structures and Architecture since 2016. Secretary of the Executive Committee of the International Association for Bridge Maintenance and Safety (2001–2018). Founder and President of the ASCP – Portuguese Association for Bridge Safety and Maintenance.

Member of the Scientific Council for Social Sciences and Humanities of the Foundation for Science and Technology (2013–2016). Member of the Research Assessment Committee (2010–2015) at the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment at TUDelft.

He teaches and conducts research in the field of Construction and Technology, focusing on the intersection of Structures and Architecture, additive manufacturing, and the innovative use of traditional materials. He is the author of more than 300 scientific publications and has extensive experience in participating in and coordinating research projects.

Editor-in-Chief of Architecture, Structures and Construction, Springer, since 2021. Associate Editor of the journal Structure and Infrastructure Engineering, published by Taylor & Francis, since 2005. Member of the Portuguese Association of Engineers (2002) and Structural Engineer (2003). Member of the National Association of Civil Engineers (2010–2013).
