Mário J. Franca
Dr. Mário Franca is a professor of Hydraulic Engineering and Water Resources Management at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in Germany. Before joining KIT, Mário held academic positions at IHE Delft and TU Delft in the Netherlands, at EPFL in Switzerland, and at the New University of Lisbon and the University of Coimbra in Portugal. He was a hydraulic engineering consultant and head of the hydraulics department at an engineering firm, having participated in and led applied projects on dams, hydropower, water supply, river engineering, drainage, mining operations, emergency planning, and the safety of hydraulic infrastructure.
Mário Franca’s research focuses on river hydraulics; turbulent processes in open-channel flows; river geomorphology and morphodynamics; density currents; and unconventional hydroelectric power generation. Recently, he has also taken an interest in the overall impact of natural and man-made hydraulic structures.
