Eugenio Oñate Ibáñez de Navarra

Dr. Eugenio Oñate Ibáñez de Navarra is a civil engineer. Over the past 35 years, his work has combined an academic career as a professor of Structural Mechanics at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC) with a research career in the field of numerical methods and their application to engineering, as well as the transfer of his research results to the industrial sector. His research achievements in the field of numerical methods and software for the analysis and design of structures, fluid dynamics, and industrial manufacturing processes are internationally recognized. His scientific contributions and the software programs derived from his research are of particular relevance for solving multidisciplinary problems in the fields of civil, industrial, aerospace, naval, and marine engineering, among others.

He has published more than 306 scientific articles in JCR-indexed journals. He has more than 5,213 citations and an h-index of 37 (Source: Web of Knowledge). He is the editor-in-chief of three JCR-indexed journals. He is the author of three textbooks and the editor of 53 books on various topics in computational mechanics (CM). He has organized 52 international conferences on different fields of computational mechanics.

He was the founder and director of CIMNE (International Center for Numerical Methods in Engineering) since 1987. He was the founder and first president of the Spanish Society for Numerical Methods in Engineering (1989–2004), founder and president of the European Community for Computational Mechanics in Applied Sciences (2000–2004, www.eccomas.org) and president of the International Association for Computational Mechanics (2002–2010, www.iacm.info).

He has helped launch several technology-based companies in Spain through CIMNE Tecnología.

He has also received numerous awards, including the Ildefons Cerdà Medal (2019), the Gauss-Newton Medal from the International Association for Computational Mechanics (IACM, 2010), and the Grand Prize from the Japan Society for Computational Engineering and Science (JSCES, 2009).
