abstract = {Event though Information and Communications technology arises as a powerful tool for the improvement of education, at present, e-learning does not improve learning methods but merely repeats the problems of traditional education. This work proposes a new educational model that tries to tackle these problems. Through the use of a global ontology as basis of a Knowledge Management System, this system allows us to establish the largest number of relationships within the available information, and its classification. From this knowledge support, learning is planned through action, which results in the execution of tasks that are based on computer games strategies. The system interacts with the student to motivate him, showing him the information adapted to his preferences.},

abstract = {Various techniques for the extraction of ANN rules have been used, but most of them have focused on certain types of networks and their training. There are very few methods that deal with ANN rule extraction as systems that are independent of their architecture, training, and internal distribution of weights, connections, and activation functions. This article proposes a methodology for the extraction of ANN rules, regardless of their architecture, and based on genetic programming. The strategy is based on the previous algorithm and aims at achieving the generalization capacity that is characteristic of ANNs by means of symbolic rules that are understandable to human beings.},

abstract = {This paper presents an application of Genetic Programming (GP) to solve one problem in the field of image processing. This problem is the recovery of a deteriorated old document from the damages caused by centuries. This document was affected by many aggresive agents, mainly by the humidity caused by a wrong storage during many years. This makes this problem particularly hard and unaffordable by other image processing techniques. Recent works have shown how Genetic Algorithms is a technique suitable for this task, but in this paper it will be shown how to obtain better results with GP. © Springer-Verlag 2004.},

abstract = {The shallow water equations are derived from the Navier-Stokes equations for incompressible fluids and are valid when the vertical velocity and acceleration of the fluid are small. The equations are adequate to model a big range of the hydrodynamic flows which appear in practical engineering situations. The shallow water equations can account for the effects of the bed slope, wind and bottom friction, turbulence, varying channel section and mass source due to superficial waters or infiltration. It has been proved by Bermudez and Vazquez [3] the convenience of upwinding the bed slope source term in order to reduce discretization errors introduced in the upwinded convective flux terms. Vazquez-Cendón [10] showed also the need of upwinding the source terms which account for the varying geometry of the transversal section. This paper focus on the study of the mass and turbulent terms in the shallow water equations, analyzing the convenience of upwinding them from an accurate as well as a stability point of view. A steady solution to the equations which relate the bed slope with the mass and turbulent terms is proposed.},

abstract = {This paper is an experimental and numerical study about propagation and reflection of waves originated by natural hazards such as sea bottom movements, hill slope sliding and avalanches. One-dimensional flume experiments were conducted to study the characteristics of such waves. The results of the experimental study can be used by other researchers to verify their numerical models. A finite volume numerical model, which solves the shallow water equations, was also verified using our own experimental results. In order to deal with reflection on sloping surfaces and overtopping walls, a new condition for the treatment of the coastline is suggested. The numerical simulation of wave generation is also studied considering the bed movement. A boundary condition is proposed for this case. Those situations when the shallow water equations are valid to simulate this type of phenomena have been studied, as well as their limitations. © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.},

abstract = {The description of the flow that takes place in clarifiers and other wastewater treatment basins may be a powerful tool to attain an optimum design of these structures, in order to make the most of the wastewater treatment plant resources. Some authors have attempted so by making use of the potential flow or the Stokes equations. When these simplifications are used, an approximation of the flow for slow creeping conditions is obtained, but only the resolution of the all-term-including Navier-Stokes equations will allow us to detect the real streamlines and the vortices that show up for even very slow water flows. The use of the Navier-Stokes formulae as the governing equations involves the appearance of complex stability problems that do not show up for the previously mentioned simplifications. In the present work a stable finite element method for the resolution of the Navier-Stokes equations is presented, verified, and used in the resolution of some wastewater treatment flow problems with very interesting results. © 2004 John Wiley and Sons, Ltd.},

abstract = {The performance of two particular designs of vertical slot fishways for two different slopes was studied in a wide range of discharges. Water depths were measured in almost the whole surface of pools. A linear relation between dimensionless discharge and depth of flow, and the same flow patterns for each design were found. With an acoustic Doppler velocimeter, three-dimensional velocities were measured at several levels in the entire pool to detect the structure of the flow and quantify velocity distribution. Two different regions in flow patterns were found: a direct flow region characterized by maximum velocities; and a recirculation region, defined by low velocities and horizontal eddies. For a given slope, the velocity at any point of the pool (particularly at the slot) may be considered independent of the discharge and constant with the depth. Some suggestions on kinetic turbulent energy are also made.},

abstract = {This paper proposes an application of Genetic Programming (GP) and Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) in hydrology, showing how these two techniques can work together to solve a problem, namely for modeling the effect of rain on the runoff flow in a typical urban basin. The ultimate goal of this research is to design a real-time alarm system to warn of floods or subsidence in various types of urban basins. abstract = {Free overflow spillways are commonly used in arch dams. The jet gains velocity as it falls, and it can generate a big impact over the rock downstream the dam. To avoid this, plunge pools are usually constructed in order to absorb a certain amount of the energy and to spread the jet. The more compact the jet is, the more severe is the impact it can generate. Some experiments have been done in order to evaluate the pressure fields over the plugeplunge pool floor. The energy dissipation due to the flight in the atmosphere has not been taken into account in most of these tests. This paper presents some results about the pressure field one can expect in these effects are considered.},

abstract = {Genetic Programming (GP) is an evolutionary method that creates computer programs that represent approximate or exact solutions to a problem. This paper proposes an application of GP in hydrology, namely for modelling the effect of rain on the run-off flow in a typical urban basin. The ultimate goal of this research is to design a real time alarm system to warn of floods or subsidence in various types of urban basin. abstract = {The scope of this research was to study the feasibility of producing high strength lightweight concrete pretensioned beams, with the same design criteria as normalweight high strength concrete, with 15.2 mm diameter strand. This paper reports an experimental program conducted to measure bond properties of two lightweight concrete dosages compared to those of a reference normal weight high strength concrete, used in a prestressing plant to produce great pretensioned beams. As a part of the research, eight specimens (prisms) were pretensioned with a 15.2 mm diameter strand centered in the cross section, without confinement reinforcement. Experimental results show that none of the prisms cracked right after transfer, which seems to guarantee that adopted strand cover, 45 mm, is enough for lightweight concrete prisms. However, some time after transfer deferred longitudinal cracking was observed in all the lightweight concrete prisms, and a considerable increase of transfer length was detected. Also a new objective method has been developed to determine transfer length from longitudinal concrete strains at strand depth.},

abstract = {The utilization of Genetic Algorithms (GA) in the development of Artificial Neural Networks is a very active area of investigation. The works that are being carried out at present not only focus on the adjustment of the weights of the connections, but also they tend, more and more, to the development of systems which realize tasks of design and training, in parallel. To cover these necessities and, as an open platform for new developments, in this article it is shown a multilevel GA architecture which establishes a difference between the design and the training tasks. In this system, the design tasks are performed in a parallel way, by using different machines. Each design process has associated a training process as an evaluation function. Every design GA interchanges solutions in such a way that they help one each other towards the best solution working in a cooperative way during the simulation. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2001.},

abstract = {Genetic Algorithms are non-deterministic, stochastic-search adaptive methods which use the theories of natural evolution and selection in order to solve a problem within a complex range of possible solutions. The aim is to control the distribution of the search space by incorporating an exhaustive method in order to maintain a constant evolution of the population. The main goal is that of redesigning the algorithm in order to add to the classic genetic algorithm method those characteristics which favour exhaustive search methods. The method explained guarantees the achievement of reasonably satisfactory solutions in short time-spans and in a deterministic way, which entails that successive repetitions of the algorithm will achieve the same solutions in almost constant time-spans. We are, therefore, dealing with an evolutionary technique which makes the most of the characteristics of genetic algorithms and exhaustive methods. © Springer-Verlag 2001.},

abstract = {This paper includes a regional flood frequency analysis within an area above 8,000 km 2, located in the northwest of Spain, in the Atlantic coast of the Autonomous Community of Galicia, known as "Rías Baixas ". The index flood method was used together with the General Extreme Value distribution adjusted to the region by the method of Probability Weighted Moments. The region's water homogeneity has been verified by measuring discharges of several regional rivers for the last three years. Homogeneity has also been demonstrated by applying the statistical regional homogeneity test. The basin area has proved a good variable to predict the mean annual flood in catchments where hydrologic information is scarce. The obtained regional flood frequency curve was compared with the curves developed for other humid worldwide regions with similar climatological characteristics. The developed method constituted a good tool for the estimation and analysis of frequency of extreme floods in the Galician region of Rías Baixas.},

abstract = {A Finite Element based program has been released to solve the steady 2D Navier-Stokes equations. The mixed-variable algorithm is used as a first approach to solve the differential problem. In order to reduce the number of equations, both a penalty and segregated formulation are implemented to give solution to the viscous incompressible flow and their results are compared with the former formulation. The program makes use of a SUPG type algorithm as a stabilisation procedure, in order to eliminate the numerical oscillations, which may appear when the boundary conditions force a sudden change in the solution, without necessarily refining the mesh. The three different algorithms are checked making use of the benchmark problems of the flow in a square cavity, the backward step and the flow past a cylinder. Finally the code is used to solve the flow in some practical problems and their results are commented. © ECCOMAS.},

abstract = {This paper presents two 2D numerical models. The first one is a free surface flow model based on finite volumes method, and the second one is a pollutant transport model based on finite elements method. To validate the flow model, the velocity field has been measured in a laboratory facility. To validate the pollutant transport model, dispersion of pollutant tests have been done by the measurement of the field of concentrations. Longitudinal and transversal dispersion coefficients have been fit in order to obtain a solution of the numerical transport model which adjusts the measured date. It has been checked that the values of these coefficients are in the same magnitude order that those obtained by the expressions proposed by Elder.},

abstract = {The paper describes the pressure fluctuation field on a plunge pool floor subjected to jet impingement. The data for both mean and fluctuating components is presented for a range of velocities, plunge length, plunge pool depths, types of outlet devices, and jet diameters. The data for circular jets are compared in detail with other data available for wide rectangular nappes and rectangular slot jets. The effect of the degree of break-up of the jet before it enters the basin and the effect of air entrainment in the plunge pool is investigated. An example is provided to demonstrate how the findings may be used in practice.},

abstract = {The existence of a dam with a large embankment capacity has an outstanding influence on the thermal equilibrium of a river. In fact, the water retained in the reservoir has an important thermal inertia; it keeps cold in summer and warm in winter, taking as a reference the temperature that the river water would have if there was no dam. Therefore, when the water starts to be drained from the dam, the process of recovery of its thermal equilibrium begins. In this study we have developed a numerical model of the thermal behaviour of the river downstream from a reservoir, which has been checked with field tests on the Ebro river. In these tests we have pointed out the main role of the reservoirs of the Mequinenza-Ribarroja-Flix system, and the main factors that determine the recovery of the equilibrium of the river downstream from the dams.},

abstract = {The flow resistance of plastic linings is an important aspect to consider when exposed membranes are used to ensure the impermeability of canals. Plastic linings are sometimes considered to reduce Manning coefficients, and thus to increase water transport capacity. In this article, experimental research work on membrane roughness coefficients is presented. The modifications to flow resistance caused by imperfect placement of the membrane are discussed. Manning coefficients for plastic linings over old concrete-lined canals are calculated for cases of good placement. In this case, a substantial reduction in the Manning coefficient can be achieved.},

abstract = {This study assessed the feasibility of using major agricultural residues specifically bagasse, rice straw, wheat straw, and coir fiber to produce single-layer particle boards. These boards of densities 300, 400, and 500 kg/m³ were developed using melamine urea formaldehyde resin. Comprehensive evaluation of the boards included determination of their sound absorption coefficient (SAC), thermal conductivity, and noise reduction coefficient (NRC), as well as various physical properties and modulus of rupture. Additionally, the impact of board density on the SAC across a frequency range of 50 to 5000 Hz was examined. The coir boards displayed superior SAC, particularly at 3000 Hz. Rice straw boards at a density of 300 kg/m³ exhibited the lowest thermal conductivity (0.098 W/m-K). Density of 300 kg/m³ was optimal for achieving the highest SAC and lowest thermal conductivity in agro residue particle boards. As the density of the boards increased, SAC decreased, whereas thermal conductivity (K) increased, indicating that lower-density boards are more effective as sound and thermal insulators. Furthermore, all particle boards demonstrated promising sound absorption capabilities, achieving classifications of D and E under ISO 11654:1997, making them viable for interior applications in the building industry.},
