abstract = {The article presents a long-term assessment of the surface water quality of six small rivers in the East Kazakhstan region (Breksa, Tikhaya, Ulba, Glubochanka, Krasnoyarka, and Oba) based on hydrochemical monitoring data from the Kazhydromet State Enterprise for the period 2017–2024. A unified water quality classification system was applied, along with statistical methods, including multiple linear regression. The Glubochanka and Krasnoyarka rivers were identified as the most polluted (reaching classes 4–5), with multiple exceedances of Zn (up to 2.96 mg/dm³), Cd (up to 0.8 mg/dm³), and Cu (up to 0.051 mg/dm³). The most stable and highest water quality was recorded in the Oba River, where from 2021 to 2024, water consistently corresponded to Class 2. Regression models of water quality class as a function of time and annual precipitation were constructed to assess the influence of climatic factors. Statistical analysis revealed no consistent linear correlation between average annual precipitation and water quality (correlation coefficients ranging from −0.49 to +0.37), indicating a complex interplay between climatic and anthropogenic factors. Significant relationships were found for the Breksa (R² = 0.903), Glubochanka (R² = 0.602), and Tikhaya (R² = 0.555) rivers, suggesting an influence of temporal and climatic factors on water quality. In contrast, the Oba (R² = 0.130), Ulba (R² = 0.100), and Krasnoyarka (R² = 0.018) rivers exhibited low coefficients, indicating the predominance of other, likely local, sources of pollution. It was found that summer periods are characterized by the highest pollution due to low water flow, while episodes of acid runoff occur in spring. A decrease in pH below 7.0 was first recorded in 2023–2024 in the Ulba and Tikhaya rivers. Forecasts to 2030 suggest relative stability in water quality under current climatic conditions; however, by 2050, the risk of water quality deterioration is expected to rise due to increased precipitation and extreme weather events. This study presents, for the first time, a systematic long-term analysis of small rivers in the East Kazakhstan region, offering deeper insight into the dynamics of surface water quality and providing a scientific foundation for developing adaptive strategies for the protection and sustainable use of water resources under climate change and anthropogenic pressure. The results emphasize the importance of prioritizing rivers with high variability in water quality for regular monitoring and the development of adaptive conservation measures. The research holds strong applied significance for shaping a sustainable water use strategy in the region.},

abstract = {This work presents the preliminary analysis of the tests conducted at the WindEEE Dome in the framework of the ERIES-SOLAR project for downburst flow. The wind tunnel characteristics, the instrumentation and reduced scale model of a six-row array of solar trackers is briefly described. The flow, similar to a vertical downburst with impinging jet velocity U ij = 8.6 m, is characterized based on the velocity records at various heights and distances from the downburst axis, obtaining the ensembles of several repetitions, PDFs, spectra and Morlet wavelets, identifying the ramp-up, plateau and decay stages. The downburst action on the array of solar trackers is assessed based on the time-dependent pressure coefficients recorded simultaneously by 576 pressure taps. In this work, the results are presented for one case of a vertical downburst, with the center of the six-row array model located at a distance 0.7 D from the downburst vertical axis. Strong increments in the net pressure coefficients are identified, associated with the effect of the deflected flow and the primary vortex reaching the vicinity of the panels. The detailed analysis of the large amount of data generated will be instrumental to identify the peak actions on solar trackers due to downburst occurrences, enabling the recommendation of load cases to be included in the best practice guidelines and structural codes for storm-prone regions.},

abstract = {The aim of this work is to investigate how open data can play a beneficial role in the regulation of combined sewer overflows (CSOs). The investigation consists of a review and critical discussion of historic CSO design, alongside more recent developments of regulations and emerging experiences of monitoring CSOs and different levels of data openness. The study focuses on practice in 10 European countries/regions. The novelty of this work comes from its review of historical development of design guidelines and regulations, shifts in the aims of these regulations, practicalities around implementation and testing of compliance, alongside the openness and availability of data. The main conclusions are that increasingly complex regulation goes hand in hand with limited compliance checking and opaque decision-making, whereas opening up relatively simplistic performance data has generated public and political discussion about urban drainage systems and the potential costs of improvements in water quality of the impacted surface water bodies. Making CSO data open does, however, need to be done with due care. Collaboration with trusted citizen groups, ensuring the data are correct, easy to access, and understand, as well as avoiding a blame culture are all of key importance.},

abstract = {A cost-effective seismic instrumentation system (LCSIS) was successfully implemented and validated for monitoring the structural health of the Peñuelas Tower, the first South American experimental 6-story light-frame timber building. The LCSIS was combined with a relative humidity and temperature measuring system to investigate the influence of ambient conditions on the building's dynamic properties. The LCSIS utilized six accelerographs, specifically RaspberryShake® R4SD, connected through a local network controlled by an auxiliary Raspberry Pi3 (RPi3). The RPi3 served multiple functions , including acting as an NTP server for instrument synchronization, enabling remote control and communication via the internet, and employing internal subroutines to periodically estimate the building's dynamic properties using the FDD method based on velocity data acquired from vertical geophones within the R4SD instruments. To ensure uninterrupted operation, the LCSIS received electrical power from a 55A battery and a battery charger, ensuring func-tionality during power outages. The LCSIS's validity was confirmed through shake table tests, demonstrating good agreement with conventional measuring systems for signal frequencies below 25-30 Hz and during a low-intensity earthquake with a magnitude of Mw = 4.6. After validating the LCSIS, a BME280 sensor was added to monitor the temperature and relative humidity inside the building continuously. This addition facilitated the implementation of a structural health monitoring system to track ambient-induced variations in the building's three principal natural frequencies. The study revealed that the build-ing's natural frequencies were susceptible to ambient variations, exhibiting daily peak-to-peak variations of 9.5-10.9% and overall variations of 24.7-29.2% over eleven months. These findings indicated that timber structures might be more susceptible to temperature and relative humidity variations than other structural systems. Surprisingly, the timber structure was stiffer under moist conditions, likely due to wood swelling and the resulting tightening of timber assemblies. To accurately compute the estimated natural frequencies, a 36-hour state-space model was developed, incorporating recorded temperature and relative humidity data.},

abstract = {Urban green spaces are increasingly recognized for their potential role in promoting public health although empirical evidence regarding their direct impact remains inconclusive. Beyond mere proximity, the aesthetic quality and subjective valuation of green areas may substantially influence how they contribute to health outcomes. Addressing a gap in the existing literature, this study establishes an explanatory model of the relationship between green spaces and health based on survey data from the city of Pontevedra (Spain). The model integrates sociodemographic variables, healthy behaviors, and aesthetic evaluations while using a health index that combines subjective perceptions of well-being with objective indicators such as medication use and medical consultations. Results show that the direct relationship between green space use and health is modest; however, green spaces are associated with increased physical activity, particularly sports practice, which in turn relates positively to health outcomes. The findings also reveal evidence of reverse causality as individuals in better health are more likely to engage in sports activities. Notably, aesthetic perceptions—especially favorable evaluations of sustainable garden designs—significantly affect the frequency and intensity of green space use. These results highlight the importance of not only expanding green spaces in urban environments but also enhancing their perceived quality to foster healthier behaviors and contribute indirectly to public health.},

abstract = {Recent scientific literature has consistently highlighted a significant increase in both the frequency and intensity of flood events, primarily attributed to the effects of climate change. Projections suggest that this trend will likely intensify in the coming decades. In this context, enhancing our understanding of flooding dynamics becomes not only necessary but urgent. A critical component of this advancement lies in the numerical analysis of historical flood events, which provides valuable insights into flood behaviour across extended temporal and spatial scales. This approach enables two key outcomes: a significant improvement in conventional methods for estimating return periods and a reduction in the uncertainties associated with historical flood events by simulating multiple plausible scenarios to identify the most likely one. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the scientific literature focused on the numerical simulation and reconstruction of past flood events. Two main conclusions emerge from this review: First, the temporal scope of the studies is notably wide, covering events ranging from glacial periods to those occurring in the mid-20th century. Second, there exists a pronounced spatial imbalance in the geographical distribution of these studies, with certain regions significantly underrepresented. This review provides a valuable resource for researchers and practitioners working in flood risk assessment and hydrological modelling. By consolidating existing knowledge, it supports the development and refinement of decision-support tools aimed at improving mitigation strategies to reduce the impact of flooding on both populations and infrastructure.},

abstract = {This study focuses on the evolution of the Arousa Island Bridge, a critical infrastructure connecting, in northwestern Spain, the Arousa island to the Galician coast. Since its commissioning in 1985, the bridge has experienced damage due to corrosion, culminating in a major repair intervention in 2011 using hybrid galvanic cathodic protection. This repair was essential in addressing identified pathologies and ensuring the safety of the structure. In 2021, additional repairs needed to be completed, and a thorough study and testing campaign was conducted in 2023 which included the extraction of zinc anode samples from the bridge. The present work evaluates the effectiveness of the repair measures implemented since the intervention, with particular attention to corrosion risk and the durability of the cathodic protection system installed to mitigate corrosion risks in the reinforced concrete exposed to a harsh marine environment. A key aspect of this study is the correlation established between the indirect measurements utilized to evaluate zinc consumption within the cathodic protection system and the direct assessment obtained from the extraction of the anodes, which provides a tangible measure of this consumption. The calculated service life was updated with the measurement, and the integrity of the system was assessed.},

abstract = {Breast cancer remains one of the most prevalent and life-threatening diseases worldwide, being the most frequently diagnosed cancer among women and the second leading cause of cancer-related mortality. Precise tumor segmentation is essential for breast cancer assessment, as it enables accurate estimation of tumor size, monitoring of disease progression, and evaluation of treatment effectiveness. Despite the importance of this task, the development of reliable automatic methods is hindered by the scarcity of fully annotated datasets, which makes manual labeling both time-consuming and subject to inter-observer variability. In this study, we propose an unsupervised 3D tumor segmentation method based on Fuzzy C-Means (FCM) clustering, specifically designed for volumetric Dynamic Contrast-Enhanced MRI (DCE-MRI) of the breast. Unlike supervised deep learning approaches, our method does not require manual annotations for training, making it especially valuable in scenarios with limited labeled data. The proposed pipeline combines preprocessing, region-of-interest extraction, and FCM-based clustering to generate accurate segmentation masks with minimal human intervention. We evaluated our approach using clinical data from the ACRIN-6698 dataset, comparing the automatic segmentations against expert manual annotations. The method achieved high performance across multiple metrics, including accuracy, precision, recall, specificity, Dice-Sørensen coefficient (DSC), and Jaccard index (IoU). These results demonstrate the feasibility of unsupervised clustering techniques for volumetric breast tumor segmentation, offering a promising alternative to supervised methods in clinical contexts where annotated data is limited.},

abstract = {This paper presents part of the findings of a shake table test on a 3-story, 1:2 scale Light Frame Timber Building (LFTB), examining the influence of system effects. Here, system effects refer to a) the effect of transverse walls in non-planar shear wall configurations, b) out-of-plane bending diaphragm interaction with the shear walls, and c) gravity load. The study contributes to comprehending and quantifying system effects, highlighting the benefits of component interaction in LFTBs subjected to lateral loads. Test results demonstrate that system effects significantly reduce story drift demands by increasing the lateral stiffness and damping ratio of the building compared to those of a building in which there are no system effects. For instance, the experimental first-floor secant stiffness was higher than the value predicted by assuming planar shear walls. This underestimation decreases at higher stories, indicating that the gravity load further enhances the benefits of transverse shear walls and out-of-plane bending stiffness interaction. These findings have implications for the design and analysis of LFTBs in seismic regions: their incorporation into seismic design procedures might promote the widespread adoption of LFTBs as a sustainable and resilient construction solution.},

abstract = {This paper examines the impact of transverse shear walls (TSW), out-of-plane bending stiffness of diaphragms (FDIA), and axial (gravity) loading (AXL) on the lateral response of strong wood-frame shear walls (SWs) in multistory light frame timber buildings (LFTBs). Experimental tests assessed the lateral cyclic response of T-shaped SW assemblies with and without diaphragms and gravity load. Tests showed that the TSW effect enhances the lateral stiffness and strength but reduces the deformation capacity. The FDIA and AXL effects further influence the stiffness and strength and compensate in part for the reduction of the deformation capacity due to the TSW effect. Diaphragms also made the T-shaped SW response more symmetrical and improved the evolution of secant stiffness, cumulative dissipated energy, and equivalent viscous damping as the lateral drift increases. Numerical analyses of a theoretical building model with T-shaped SWs showed significant reductions in lateral drift and uplift compared to those of Planar SWs alone, highlighting the importance of considering system effects in the seismic design of LFTBs.},

abstract = {Wind-turbine systems face significant design challenges posed by complex environmental conditions, including wind, waves, current, and their interactions. In this study, we utilized the open-source solver OpenFOAM to develop a fully coupled hydrodynamic model simulating the effects of both waves and currents on offshore monopiles. Validation against experimental data and theoretical predictions using the Morison equation indicated good agreement. Current contributed significantly to the average hydrodynamic load, while waves were the dominant source of unsteady loads. The wave load increased proportionally with amplitude, and wave run-up caused greater fluctuations in hydrodynamic loads when wave heights exceeded 0.12 m. The validated computational model serves as a high-fidelity tool for developing surrogate models that capture variations in monopile geometry and environmental conditions, thus promoting more efficient and cost-effective offshore wind-turbine design.INTRODUCTION. Global warming and the energy crisis emphasize the urgency of adopting renewable energy sources, with wind energy emerging as a leading contender in recent years. Over the past decade, the wind-energy sector has experienced rapid advancements, positioning it as a key solution for sustainable energy production. While onshore wind energy has been widely utilized, offshore wind energy offers clear advantages, including access to more abundant wind resources, reduced visual and noise impacts, and the potential for higher energy yields. Consequently, offshore wind energy has become instrumental in driving the global expansion of wind power installations. There are various types of foundation used to support offshore wind turbines, designed based on water depth. Monopiles have emerged as the most prevalent foundation type for shallow waters due to their cost-effectiveness, straightforward installation, and minimal seabed preparation requirements. As of 2020, monopiles accounted for 81% of installed offshore wind-turbine foundations in Europe, underscoring their relevance (Europe W, 2020; Shi et al., 2023).The hydrodynamic loads induced by waves and current are among the most critical environmental forces affecting the design of offshore wind turbines. These loads significantly influence the structural integrity and stability of the foundation, playing a pivotal role in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of offshore wind turbines. Design standards, such as IEC-61400-3-1 (2019), account for the effects of current by the hydrodynamic force coefficients. However, the literature does not comprehensively cover all common flow regimes relevant to large wind turbines, leaving gaps in understanding and application for certain scenarios. Because waves and current act concurrently, their combined effect may yield various force coefficients. These coefficients have been commonly obtained in two-dimensional laboratory experiments where an oscillating cylinder is used to model the waves and currents in the uniform flow, or a dragging cylinder in the oscillating flow. The Morison (1950) equation is the conventional method for calculating wave-induced forces on piles. However, determining the drag and inertia force coefficients presents challenges due to the numerous contributing factors that are difficult to be determined from theoretical considerations. Consequently, experimental modeling is often employed to obtain accurate hydrodynamic coefficients. The characteristic wave breaking and loads on monopile are well understood. Robertson et al. (2016) summarized the findings from the OC5 project, which aimed to predict the hydrodynamic loads and acceleration response of flexible and fixed cylinders in various wave conditions. The study focused on nonlinear water waves near breaking, supported by extensive computational and experimental data that provide a solid foundation for further work. Verification and validation efforts like these enhance offshore wind modeling tools, paving the way for more innovative and cost-effective offshore wind energy design.},

abstract = {Twin-box decks are prone to vortex-induced vibration (VIV) at moderate wind speeds, and previous studies have shown a complex interplay between the flow and the two parallel box girders. OpenFOAM is used to model the aerodynamic and aeroelastic responses of the twin-box deck of the Stonecutters Bridge by means of 3D LES simulations. Two cases are thoroughly analysed under smooth incoming flow: (i) static deck and ii) heave peak amplitude response at VIV excitation. The computational data provided by the CFD simulations have been exploited aiming at better understanding the complex aerodynamic and aeroelastic phenomena taking place. First, spanwise correlation analyses are applied to understand the level of organisation of the forcing flow actions, and identify the regions of the deck affected by different flow structures. Second, three different mode decomposition techniques (POD, SPOD and DMD) are applied to the time-dependent pressure distributions, revealing the pivotal role played by the leeward box in the twin-box deck response under wind action. The modal analyses are of utmost interest in the development of Reduced Order Models (ROM) for the VIV response of twin-box long-span bridges.},

abstract = {Despite the growing application of machine learning (ML) in water quality assessment and pollution source identification, its potential for predicting environmental risk indices in urban stormwater sediments remains largely unexplored. Conventional models struggle to capture complex interactions among hydrological variables, sediments and pollution parameters. This study uses ML techniques to enhance sediment quality assessment to address this gap. The case study focuses on sediments from the Molinos River in Bogotá, Colombia, characterized by particle size distribution (PSD), heavy metal (HM) concentrations, and environmental risk indices. Cohen's Kappa coefficient was used to evaluate the relationship between the enrichment factor (EF) of Ni and Pb, PSD, and hydrological variables as rainfall data. A support vector machine model using an ANOVA kernel, validated through multiple calibration and validation datasets, demonstrated the feasibility of predicting sediment-related risks in urban drainage systems. The best model successfully predicted Pb EF levels for 7 of 8 samples, achieving a Cohen's Kappa coefficient of 0.71 (p = 0.037), indicating substantial agreement. These findings highlight the potential of ML models to predict sediment EF using rainfall data, providing a practical tool for environmental risk assessment. By enabling predictions of contamination levels, this methodology enhances decision-making and promotes more sustainable urban water management strategies.},

abstract = {Urban drainage modelling is essential for effective city planning and flood management. The increasing complexity of urban environments and the growing availability of high-resolution data have led to the need to develop more sophisticated and freely accessible urban drainage models. This paper presents the parallel implementation of Iber-SWMM, a freely distributed integrated 2D/1D urban drainage model for modelling surface and sewer flows and their interactions. Iber-SWMM constitutes an advance in the field by incorporating a fully distributed hydrological approach, advanced roof modelling tools, and GIS interoperability, offering a comprehensive solution for urban hydrodynamics. Originally designed for research in small urban drainage models due to CPU limitations, Iber-SWMM has now been enhanced with High Performance Computing (HPC) techniques. This allows for the simulation of high-resolution urban models with fine meshes comprising millions of elements, essential for accurate representation of complex urban geometries. We validated the model through laboratory-scale tests and two city-scale scenarios, providing detailed input data and demonstrating the applicability of the model in real-world situations. Our results show that the GPU-accelerated version achieves simulation speeds up to 200 times faster than the sequential version for large models. For instance, in a city-scale scenario with approximately 6 million cells, 3000 nodes, and 3000 links, simulation time was reduced from 72 h to just 20 min. To ensure result consistency and assess convergence, we conducted simulations using low, medium, and high-resolution computational meshes for each case study. Our findings indicate that both parallel and sequential versions produce consistent results, with convergence typically achieved at medium to high resolutions. Notably, we observed that for very large models, the computation of the drainage network in SWMM can become a bottleneck, suggesting an area for future optimization. By enabling the simulation of high-resolution urban models with millions of elements up to 200 times faster than sequential versions, this study bridges the gap between academic research and practical urban planning, empowering stakeholders to conduct more detailed, city-wide simulations, and ultimately contributing to faster urban flood risk management.},

Initially, natural river flow is reconstructed to address the challenge posed by river regulation, which complicates accurate hydrological modeling and can obscure the true impact of climate change. The Iber+ hydrodynamic model is applied to account for downstream reservoir contributions, which allows reversing their influence. Then, neural networks of varying configurations, with specific requirements such as data bucketing, are trained to replicate river flow utilizing recorded precipitation and temperature datasets, subjected to validation procedures. A multi-model ensemble is constructed to address uncertainties inherent in modeling future hydrological climate scenarios. This ensemble, supplied with climate model data, derives historical and projected river flows, allowing analysis of their temporal evolution.
New hydrological insights for the region
The findings affirm the efficacy of the proposed methodology and reveal, for the considered high-risk SSP5–8.5 scenario, the intensification of the Tagus hydrological cycle. Within the inherent uncertainty of climate models, average ensemble outputs indicate a reduction of about −20 % in available water at the end of the century, especially critical during summer, with an almost 600 % rise in dry months. Average ensemble results also indicate an increase in flooding events, with extreme floods that currently have five-year frequency, projected to double by the century’s end.},

abstract = {This dataset contains raw and processed data from controlled experiments conducted in a rainfall simulator to quantify the impacts of incremental sand and leaf litter accumulation on the hydrological performance of blue-green infrastructure (BGI). The tests were conducted in a controlled indoor environment using two BGI boxes (approximately 3.84 m² each), representing a typical infiltration-based BGI setup with vegetation, a 6-cm deep substrate, and storage layers. Soil moisture sensors and tipping buckets were installed to measure underdrain flow. In one box, sand was incrementally added (2–18 kg.m−²); in the other, leaf litter accumulation ranged from 0.3 to 1.725 kg (total). Each scenario received rainfall (16.66 mm.h−1 for Box 1; 18.66 mm.h−1 for Box 2) for 30 minutes, with intervals larger than four hours between tests. The dataset can be used to understand the impact of shock events that introduce high pollutant loads to the BGI surface and subsurface, affecting their hydrological performance. It can also be used to study the maintenance needs of BGI to sustain their hydrological functionality.},

abstract = {This study investigated the accumulation of toxic and essential elements in trout from a pit lake situated in the surroundings of the abandoned As Pontes de García Rodríguez lignite mine (NW Spain). The element concentrations were compared with those measured in fish from upstream of the River Eume and from a local fish farm. Liver and muscle samples from fish captured in the lake (n = 16), river (n = 14) and fish farm (n = 10) captured in March–April 2022 were acid digested and analyzed by ICP-MS. The mining activity in As Pontes was found to have significantly impacted the aquatic ecosystem. Concentrations of Cd, Ni, Co, and Cu in the livers of the lake fish were significantly higher than in the livers of the other groups of fish, probably due to run-off from the spoil heap reaching the lake. Similarly, higher concentrations of Al, Pb, and Hg were observed in the river trout, associated with coal combustion at a near thermal power plant. Despite these variations, toxic and essential elements in both the pit lake and river remained low, within water quality standards, and do not pose an immediate threat to aquatic life. Concentrations of the metals in the muscle of wild fish, although higher than in farmed fish, were within EU limits. abstract = {Rapid urbanisation generates important challenges in terms of sustainability and spatial justice, but also presents opportunities to transform cities into more equitable and resilient spaces. This study addresses these issues and aims to analyse the perceptions and evaluations of the resident population of Pontevedra about urban spaces in the framework of a renaturalisation project, integrating socio-demographic and spatial justice factors. Quantitative methods such as factor analysis, cluster analysis and multiple regression were used to identify patterns of satisfaction and the use of urban spaces. This study reveals significant differences in the valuation of urban spaces according to socio-demographic variables, especially in relation to sustainability and social cohesion. The findings thus provide empirical evidence to guide more inclusive urban policies and emphasise the need to incorporate citizen participation in urban design to promote territorial equity.},

abstract = {This opinion paper reflects on the current challenges facing urban drainage systems (UDS) research, along with solutions for fostering sustainable development. Over the course of a year-long project involving 92 participants aged 24–38, including PhD candidates, post-doctoral researchers, and early-career academics, we identified critical challenges and opportunities for the sustainable development of UDS. Our exploration highlights four key challenges: limited public visibility leading to resource constraints, insufficient collaboration across subfields, issues with data scarcity and data sharing, and geographical specificities. We emphasise the importance of raising public and political awareness regarding UDS's vital role in climate adaptation and urban resilience, advocating for blue-green infrastructure and open data practices. Additionally, we address systemic academic barriers that hinder innovative research. We call for a shift away from metrics that prioritise quantity over quality. We recommend establishing stable career pathways that empower early-career researchers. This paper aims to catalyse a broader community dialogue about the future of UDS research, uniting voices from various career stages. By presenting actionable recommendations, we aim to inspire fundamental changes in research conduct, evaluation, and sustainability, ensuring the field of UDS is prepared to meet pressing urban water management challenges worldwide.},

abstract = {Numerous TCC (timber-concrete composite) systems have been proposed and studied in recent years. Most of the studies have focused on the behaviour of the timber-concrete shear connection and the flexural behaviour of floor elements. This paper presents the results of an experimental and numerical study comparing the behaviour of a simply supported (SS) beam and a beam connected in continuity to mixed TCC supports, named as frame-connected beam (FC). The objective of this study is to assess the potential benefits of using a semi-rigid beam-to-support connection in the overall design of the structure. Full-scale tests were carried out with 370 mm height and 600 mm width beams and 5.9 m span. The failure load of the SS beam was found to be equivalent to an uniformly distributed load of 97.8 kN/m. The maximum loads applied to the FC beam were 28 % higher, yet did not achieve failure because the loading device's limit was reached. The deflection of the simply supported beam was less than 1/335 of the span for a load of 36 kN/m, reducing to 1/776 in the frame-connected specimen. A three-dimensional finite element model has been validated and calibrated from the test results. This model has been used to evaluate the moment redistribution in the frame-connected beam which, in the case studied, allows the maximum stresses in the timber members to be reduced by up to 49 %.},

abstract = {Twin-box decks are prone to suffer vortex-induced vibrations (VIV). Although this phenomenon has been widely studied experimentally, there are still gaps in our understanding about the complex interplay between the incoming flow, the windward and leeward boxes, and the potential oscillation of the deck. This work exploits the ability of 3D LES simulations to simulate complex aeroelastic phenomena to delve into the linkage between aerodynamic forcing and heave oscillation through detailed analysis of comprehensive datasets. Several reduced velocities are studied in the VIV-prone range of the bare deck of the Stonecutters Bridge, analysing the spectra of the time-histories of force coefficients, for the overall deck and individual boxes, and heave oscillations. Similarly, the contribution of the local lift coefficient has been studied along with the work done by the deck and the individual boxes at different reduced velocities. It has been found that the leeward box is the one governing the overall VIV response of the deck. The spanwise-averaged time-averaged work distribution around the deck permits the identification of those regions contributing to the heave oscillation build-up, enabling the design of aerodynamic countermeasures for mitigation of VIV tailored for the specific deck geometry and dynamical properties of the deck.},

abstract = {Impermeable surfaces such as roofs play a key role in urban pluvial floods due to the rapid transfer of rainfall to drainage networks, contributing to system overloading. This study proposes and evaluates different modelling strategies within large-scale urban drainage models, exploring simplified approaches for roof geometry and roof-to-manhole connections. The results indicate that, regardless of the methodology used to estimate roof width, the differences become negligible if the discharge point is distant. Additionally, for a contributing area of roofs discharging upstream to a manhole, the method of roof-to-manhole connection does not have a significant influence, which demonstrates the potential of these strategies to streamline the modelling process without compromising the reliability of the simulations. The findings highlight the feasibility of applying these modelling strategies in situations where data completeness is not feasible, offering a balanced solution between model complexity and accuracy.},

abstract = {Implicit Large Eddy simulation (iLES) has gained substantial popularity for modelling high-Reynolds-number turbulent flows, found across several engineering and scientific fields. iLES on a first read represents a simple, computationally efficient, and straightforward way to model turbulent flows. The numerical dissipation/dispersion errors of high-resolution high-order numerical schemes employed in this context, can mimic the effects of the unresolved flow scales, and therefore acting like a subgrid-scale model, most often successfully. The numerical dissipation and dispersion of high-resolution methods are intertwined and controlling them to obtain physically meaningful results in under-resolved grid settings of compressible flows is challenging due to the presence of discontinuities and smooth flow features simultaneously. A numerical method should have the right amount of dissipation/dispersion, such that it can avoid the unphysical “build-up” of energy in the high modes or excessive diffusion, since this will render the method unsuitable for iLES. Several elegant approaches to master this delicate balance have been presented in the literature, including polynomial de-aliasing, Riemann solver dissipation adjustment, and adaptive blending of central and upwind schemes. This work presents an adaptive dissipation/dispersion adjustment (ADDA) algorithm that determines a well-resolved and under-resolved region and adjusts the numerical dissipation/dispersion of a high-order CWENOZ scheme, followed by further adjusting the flux-dissipation term depending on the presence of discontinuities. Implemented within an arbitrary-order finite-volume framework for unstructured meshes in compressible flows, the ADDA algorithm is put to the test across a range of under-resolved iLES simulations encompassing subsonic, transonic, and supersonic regimes. The developed framework exhibits enhanced robustness and scale-resolving capabilities, all while achieving physically meaningful results in a computationally efficient manner. All the methods have been implemented and have been made available to the research community in the open-source UCNS3D CFD solver to accelerate the improvement of the methods.},

abstract = {In this work we propose a very high-order compressible finite volume scheme with a posteriori stabilization for the computation of multi-component two-phase flow with phase change. It is based on finite volume approach using moving least squares (MLS) reproducing kernels for high order reconstruction of the Riemann states. Increased robustness is achieved by using the multi-dimensional optimal order detection (MOOD) method to get a high-accurate and low-dissipation scheme while maintaining boundedness and preventing numerical oscillations at interfaces and strong gradient zones. The properties of the proposed framework are demonstrated on classical test problems starting with convergence order verification on simple scalar advection test cases. More complex shock and more stringent tube tests with various water, steam and air concentration are then simulated and compared with available references in the literature. Finally, the ability of the proposed approach to compute multi-component flows with phase change is illustrated with the simulation of a liquid oxygen jet in gaseous hydrogen.},

abstract = {Urban pluvial floods are characterised by a number of features such as the high spatial and temporal resolution needed to capture their dynamics, the complexity of dual drainage systems and the lack of sewer data availability, which make them very different from other types of floods, like coastal or fluvial floods, and which increase the difficulty of modelling them. As a consequence, most flood management plans do not include a rigorous evaluation of urban pluvial flood risk. In this paper, we give a comprehensive view of the current state of urban pluvial flood modelling, not restricted to a mere description of the mathematical approaches, but also including the most relevant features that should be considered in their modelling, the validation studies that have been performed to date and our vision on the modelling challenges that should be addressed in the near future.},

abstract = {This article proposes a model that makes possible the seismic analysis of timber frame multistory buildings in general-purpose software. The model is entitled link frame model (LFM) and shows the following advantages in comparison to previous models: (1) it can model shearwalls only with frame elements and links with errors close to 0% with respect to analytical code models such as e.g. the special design provisions for wind and seismic (SDPWS); (2) for seismic analysis, both the static analysis method and the modal spectral analysis method can be used, in addition to the gravitational analysis; (3) the computation of the natural period shows deviations close to 0% in comparison with eigenvalues and eigenvectors; (4) it can be implemented in general purpose structural analysis software such as e.g. ETABS or SAP2000; and (5) building system effects, i.e. interaction of shearwalls with other assemblies, can optionally be captured if assigning the proper diaphragm out-of-plane flexural stiffness. Given the great impact of this last aspect in practical design, and the lack of its research, this paper does not only present the model and validation itself, but also analyzes the consequences of considering system effects in a representative case study building. The analysis demonstrates that the average shearwall tension (uplift) of regular buildings can decrease by 80% if considering system effects, which could make timber buildings much more cost competitive in seismic countries.},

abstract = {Most of the research addressing energy efficiency improvements on existing conventional railway lines is essentially from the point of view of train operation and does not analyse the possibilities that small actions on the railway infrastructure can bring. This fact is particularly significant for freight trains, whose movement is severely conditioned by uphill gradients, crossing points and speed restrictions. This article considers a conventional railway line, assessing the results, from the point of view of energy efficiency gains, of local upgrades of the existing railway infrastructure. The results obtained show that surgical interventions on existing railway infrastructure would improve the energy efficiency of freight trains, which is part of ‘decarbonisation’ policies and the fight against climate change. This kind of analysis can constitute a new contribution to decision-making processes, which will contribute to the achievement of the objectives assumed by the European Union.},

abstract = {Given the small wavelengths and wide range of frequencies of the acoustic waves involved in Aeroacoustics problems, the use of very accurate, low-dissipative numerical schemes is the only valid option to accurately capture these phenomena. However, as the order of the scheme increases, the computational time also increases. In this work, we propose a new high-order flux reconstruction in the framework of finite volume (FV) schemes for linear problems. In particular, it is applied to solve the Linearized Euler Equations, which are widely used in the field of Computational Aeroacoustics. This new reconstruction is very efficient and well suited in the context of very high-order FV schemes, where the computation of high-order flux integrals are needed at cell edges/faces. Different benchmark test cases are carried out to analyze the accuracy and the efficiency of the proposed flux reconstruction. The proposed methodology preserves the accuracy while the computational time relatively reduces drastically as the order increases.},

abstract = {The exact modelling of reinforced concrete structures necessitates a thorough control of post-cracking behaviour and the evolution of plastic deformations of concrete during loading-unloading cycles. Conducting a direct tensile test is more complex than the other tests, like the splitting test. This study investigates using the splitting test with digital image correlation (DIC) technique to analyse concrete deformation. By filming and processing images of splitting cylindrical specimens using GOM Correlate software, full stress-strain curves up to failure are obtained. Strain gauges are also employed for comparison. Results are validated against an analytical model, showing good agreement between stress-strain curves from both methods. The study concludes that DIC offers several advantages over conventional methods, including enhanced post-peak data acquisition and the ability to monitor cracks individually, regardless of their location on the surface. This approach improves the understanding of post-cracking behaviour and the evolution of plastic deformation in concrete structures.},

abstract = {The main objective of this paper is to analyze, through a unique large-scale modeling facility, the RDS wash-off under various scenarios of intense rainfall and high RDS masses. A 1:1 scale physical modeling facility was used to allow precise measurement of the RDS wash-off phenomenon under two different rainfall intensities (30/50 mm/h) and three initial RDS masses (100/150/200 g/m2). The accumulated and discharged masses of RDS in the different components of the modeling facility (roadway/RW, gully pot/GP and manhole/MH) were collected at the end of the wash-off simulations. The results suggested the following sequence of intervention in the components of the drainage system to control pollution associated with fine RDS (< 63 μm): MH (59.2 %) > GP (31.2 %) > RW (9.6 %). The wash-off simulations suggested the following maximum (30/68 g/m2), minimum (16/38 g/m2) and minimum (2.15/2.61 g/m2) limits on the mass of RDS remaining on the RW, removed by the GP and discharged into the MH, respectively. These mass limits were relevant to understand the RDS behavior and to suggest improvement strategies for the RW cleaning systems (coarse/fine fractions washed-off: 80.3/81.7 %), GPs (coarse/fine fractions removed: 75.3/49.6 %) and MHs (coarse/fine fractions discharged: 5/32.1 %). Finally, the results suggested that the size fractions <63 μm and between 500 and 1000 μm were representative of the wash-off for the finest and coarsest fractions of the RDS, respectively.},

abstract = {Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a major neurodegenerative dementia, with its complex pathophysiology challenging current treatments. Recent advancements have shifted the focus from the traditionally dominant amyloid hypothesis toward a multifactorial understanding of the disease. Emerging evidence suggests that while amyloid-beta (Aβ) accumulation is central to AD, it may not be the primary driver but rather part of a broader pathogenic process. Novel hypotheses have been proposed, including the role of tau protein abnormalities, mitochondrial dysfunction, and chronic neuroinflammation. Additionally, the gut–brain axis and epigenetic modifications have gained attention as potential contributors to AD progression. The limitations of existing therapies underscore the need for innovative strategies. This study explores the integration of machine learning (ML) in drug discovery to accelerate the identification of novel targets and drug candidates. ML offers the ability to navigate AD’s complexity, enabling rapid analysis of extensive datasets and optimizing clinical trial design. The synergy between these themes presents a promising future for more effective AD treatments.},

abstract = {Considering that Brazilian research in Environmental Psychology is largely concentrated within the 50º Working Group of the National Association for Research and Post-Graduate Studies in Psychology (GT-50), the current study analysed materials and practices produced by its members which were aligned with UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) in order to understand their contribution towards healthy societies in Brazil. The authors organized the practices and materials into five thematic sections, analyzed them through a healthy society framework and discussed current and potential contributions towards the framework components: people, places, products, planet. The main findings indicate progress in equity, community spaces, eco-behaviours, and nature-based solutions. Gaps include targeting commercial determinants of environment and health, macro-scaling urban governance barriers, explicit ties to global targets, and scaling individual-level outcomes to systemic policy changes. Methodological limitations are presented towards the choice to focus on GT-50 and theoretical critiques on SDG principles and practices are produced. abstract = {In this work, the design of a three-legged jacket is presented, taking into account the susceptibility to the directionality of the loads in comparison with a four-legged jacket. For this purpose, two jackets with different orientations with respect to the incoming environmental loads were modelled: the G30, which has two legs facing the main incoming environmental actions, and the G90 jacket, which only has one. In addition, mathematical optimization is proposed to minimize the weight of the structure using a combination of size and shape optimization techniques. The solution to the proposed optimization problem is based on the application of sequential linear programming, which is then solved using the simplex method. In this study, a first-order sensitivity analysis was reformulated to extend its applicability to a three-legged configuration. This sensitivity analysis provides the derivatives of the coordinates of the structure nodes with respect to the design variables required for the shape optimization. The proposed formulation allows optimized designs with a weight reduction of around 40% relative to the UpWind jacket. In the G30 jacket, there was an increase in fatigue damage from the cyclic loads. The G90 jacket and optimal four-legged jacket present design limitations conditioned by the effects of compression stresses and buckling. The differences between the G30 and G90 models highlight the sensitivity of the structural response to the directionality of the loads, which can constitute a limiting factor in the cost reduction of three-legged jackets. An interesting result of this research is that the added shape design variables for the jacket footprint allowed a significant improvement of the optimized designs.},

abstract = {There is a growing trend to promote circular economy practices and reduce petroleum-derived product consumption in the paving sector. In this context, a liquid lignin-rich industrial waste was incorporated at 0% (control), 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% into a bitumen emulsion to manufacture a lignin-based biobinder for half-warm-mix asphalt (HWMA). The mix of the bitumen emulsion and the industrial waste was made using an Ultra-turrax device, with the final mixing temperature monitored using a thermographic camera. Microstructure analysis was conducted using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The bitumen was extracted and characterized using needle penetration tests at several temperatures. Additionally, the ring-and-ball softening point, penetration index, and ductility were assessed. Incorporating up to 5% of lignin-rich industrial waste led to a lignin-based biobinder that could be used for a more sustainable and bitumen-efficient HWMA production.},

abstract = {Identifying flood-inducing processes remains a challenge in catchment hydrology due to the complex runoff dynamics, particularly in semi-arid regions where surface and subsurface mechanisms alternatively drive streamflow across seasons. Tracer data can help identify hydrograph sources, but they are often unavailable or lack sufficient temporal resolution. To aid process identification at the event-scale, we developed an integrated hydrological-hydrodynamic framework and compared multiple model hypotheses informed by hydrological signatures. We systematically tested these hypotheses through falsification, meta-evaluation, spatial validation, and posterior diagnostics, using the semi-arid Salsola nested catchment in southern Italy as case study. While all model structures performed well on common calibration metrics, differences emerged in spatial transferability tests and alternative diagnostic assessments. Some models, despite strong performance, exhibited inconsistent representations of internal runoff mechanisms, indicating that they achieved good results for the wrong reasons. Furthermore, the choice of routing schemes significantly influenced high-peak estimations and overall model performance, particularly when Horton-type overland flow was considered. This underscores the need to treat routing methods as a key component in event-scale modeling. Our findings reveal that during consecutive storm events in the study catchment, surface processes dominate the initial stages, whereas subsurface processes become more influential in later events, providing valuable insights that may be applicable to similar semi-arid regions. Overall, we emphasize the importance of hypothesis testing in runoff process identification, which can compensate for the absence of hydrochemical data for hydrograph separation. Additionally, our results highlight the value of a landscape-based modeling approach for distinguishing alternative runoff generation processes.},

abstract = {Standardized information on the processes and requirements for information exchanges is critical to ensure accurate cost estimations. However, traditional methods based on 2D information lack the standardization and information required for efficient and reliable early commercial evaluation. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of the information exchange model (EM-01) proposed for the commercial evaluation of industrialized timber projects. This study adopted two illustrative cases of projects to make a comparative analysis between the traditional method that prefabrication companies use and the EM-01. The evaluation focused on effectiveness, efficiency, level of certainty, and the user’s perception. The results indicate that both methods enable project evaluation. However, the EM-01 offers better efficiency by reducing work time, reduces uncertainty by minimizing assumptions, and improves the user’s perception of the reliability of the commercial evaluation. The EM-01 provides more standardized information and specific structural design data supporting the early commercial evaluation. This study supports the idea that incorporating standardized information into the processes and requirements for information exchanges enhances the accuracy and reliability of early commercial evaluation in industrialized timber projects.},

abstract = {From a sociological perspective, this research aims to evaluate the benefits associated with the re-naturalization of cities in social terms; to analyze whether biophilic cities are really healthy cities, walkable cities. To this end, a survey was conducted among the population of Pontevedra (Galicia, Spain) on their routines in relation to green spaces, their state of health, and their habitual physical activity practices, such as walking and playing sports. Multivariate linear regression and ANOVA analyses are used to explore possible links between the use of public green spaces in the city, social well-being, and health status of the resident population, measured through medication use, medical consultations, and self-perceived health. At the same time, synergies between the frequency of visits or length of stay and the socio-demographic characteristics of users are investigated; assessing in parallel the level of satisfaction with specific aspects of the city. The results suggest that frequent use of green spaces is correlated with better self-perceived health and more frequent participation in walking and sporting activities. However, special attention needs to be paid to territorial, educational, economic, and demographic issues to ensure that the entire population can enjoy these spaces regardless of their social and personal situation.
Desde una perspectiva sociológica, esta investigación pretende evaluar los beneficios asociados a la renaturalización de las ciudades en términos sociales; analizar si las ciudades biofílicas son realmente ciudades saludables, ciudades caminables. Para ello, se realizó una encuesta a la población de Pontevedra (Galicia, España) sobre sus rutinas en relación con los espacios verdes, su estado de salud y sus prácticas habituales de actividad física, como caminar y hacer deporte. Se utilizan análisis de regresión lineal multivariante y ANOVA para explorar posibles vinculaciones entre el uso de los espacios verdes públicos de la ciudad, el bienestar social y el estado de salud de la población residente, medida a través del consumo de medicamentos, las consultas médicas y salud autopercibida. Al mismo tiempo, se investigaron las sinergias entre la frecuencia de visita o la duración de la estancia y las características sociodemográficas de los usuarios; evaluando paralelamente el nivel de satisfacción con aspectos específicos de la ciudad. Los resultados sugieren que el uso frecuente de los espacios verdes está correlacionado con una mejor salud autopercibida y una participación más frecuente en actividades de paseo y deportivas. Sin embargo, es necesario prestar especial atención a las cuestiones territoriales, educativas, económicas y demográficas para garantizar que toda la población pueda disfrutar de estos espacios independientemente de su situación social y personal.},

abstract = {Industrialized construction faces persistent fragmentation challenges that negatively impact project performance. Although there is consensus on the importance of integration, its effective adoption in industrialized construction, particularly for modular timber building companies, remains underexplored. This study examines how intra-organization fragmentation and stakeholder integration influence project performance through a combined empirical case study and theoretical simulation analysis. This study adopted a computational modeling strategy based on the Virtual Design Team (VDT) approach to simulate the organizational structure and process in a real-world industrialized timber building company. The VDT’s baseline results reveal significant rework from inadequate early integration among specialties and functional departments, increasing the project schedule. A revised scenario introduces horizontal and vertical integration by co-locating design and manufacturing team members and reducing the decision-making level. These adjustments substantially reduced rework in design phases and shortened the project duration below the original plan. The critical role of early collaborative involvement of all disciplines emphasizes that integrated organizational structures and processes are essential for ensuring reliable project outcomes in industrialized timber building companies. This research provides empirically grounded insights highlighting the strategic importance of integration in industrialized construction and establishes a validated modeling basis to guide practical interventions and future research on integration-driven improvements.},

abstract = {p>A novel suspended footbridge is currently under development in the northwest of Spain, featuring one of the world’s largest single spans of 648 metres. Designed using lightweight 4-metre steel bridge deck modules, the structure emphasizes efficiency and aesthetic appeal. A distinctive aspect of this project is its towerless design, which requires anchoring the main cables well away from the ends of the deck, setting a new world record for the spacing between cable anchorages at 828 m. Additionally, the design includes spatial catenaries arranged on inclined planes and the deck incorporates a bottom bracing system consisting of cables arranged in inverted parabolas. Vibration and aerodynamic instability studies show sufficient vertical, lateral, and torsional rigidity. This design results in an aesthetically remarkable structure that promises user comfort despite its exceptional dimensions.},

abstract = {p>Stress ribbon bridges are very slender structures that are used in many different locations, from urban areas and public parks to open space of mountainous places. They are preferred for pedestrian or sometimes bicycle traffic. Their construction involves a number of operations that modify the structural system and therefore the structural analysis must take into account this circumstance. One of the main constraints of this typology is the value of the vertical and transversal accelerations produced by pedestrians walking along the bridge and because of that there are codes of practice that establish the maxima allowable values. In this paper, the design of a stress ribbon bridge in Northwest Spain over the A Coruña bay is presented. It is composed by two spans of about 150 m each, so the overall dimensions are similar to the longest bridges of this class. The pedestrian comfort showed the bridge performs very appropriately.},

abstract = {Over the past few years, the frequency and intensity of extreme climate events such as thunderstorms and downbursts have increased. These non-synoptic events involve large fluctuations in wind speed and angle of attack, potentially inducing critical conditions for bridge decks. Technological advancements in full-scale monitoring have not only confirmed these characteristics but have also enabled deeper investigations of long-span bridges aeroelastic behavior. These circumstances have proven to be a valuable opportunity for the IABSE TG3.1, which has been involved for the past 6 years in benchmarking software to compute bridge responses to turbulent winds, to extend the validation of numerical methods to extreme weather phenomena. To achieve this goal, it was decided to compare the results of numerical simulations obtained by the participants with the measured full-scale response of the Hardanger Bridge during the storm “Tor”, which struck the bridge in 2016. To provide a suitable input for the simulations, wind tunnel tests were carried out in the Politecnico di Milano wind tunnel on a deck sectional model of the bridge. This paper presents the first numerical results and compares them with the monitored bridge response.},

abstract = {In this research, the lateral and gravitational behaviors of four timber–concrete composite (TCC) slab-to-wall connections were tested to study their lateral and gravitational behaviors. Results showed that the lateral behavior of the connections was mainly controlled by the concrete slab, since the timber sections and connections remained mostly unaffected. The experimental results were contrasted with a linear finite element model built in ETABS, thus explaining why the experimental lateral strength was six times larger than that analytically obtained via ACI 318-19. As for the gravitational tests, results showed a higher shear capacity in connections with screws as the wall-to-slab connector than those with bars. In general, all the connections showed much higher strength and stiffness than those typically required by design code standards.},
