abstract = {Urbanized areas have important effects on flow development and runoff quantity, so their influence on floods and rainfall-runoff development is crucial. For an accurate prediction of runoff quantity, velocities and depths in each single street of an urban area, a detailed 2D model is generally desirable, but this approach is costly in data requirements and computational time. In recent years some efforts have been devoted to study how to account for the effects of urbanized areas in flow fields in a macroscopic manner, taking into account water storage and obstruction effects without including a detailed geometry of the urban area. The present paper presents a comparison between three different approaches in the representation of urban areas in a two-dimensional model, one of them taking into account the detailed geometry of the urban area resolved approach and another two being large scale approaches that compute for the effects of urban geometry in a macroscopic manner porosity approach and Manning coefficient approach. © 2013 Taylor & Francis Group, London.},

abstract = {The objective of this research was to evaluate the feasibility of producing structural lightweight concrete prestressed girders with load-bearing capacities similar to conventional concrete girders. The methodology consisted of comparing the results of the production and monitoring of scaled prestressed concrete beams at a precasting plant and the subsequent flexural testing. The beams were produced using two types of lightweight concrete and a conventional reference concrete with similar compressive strengths to allow for a comparison of the structural performance of the beams. The goal was to estimate an upper bound for the development length of fully developed prestressing strands with a diameter of 15.2. mm (0.6″). The load-bearing capacity and ductility of the beams were determined by flexural tests. All lightweight and conventional concrete beams exceeded their nominal flexural strengths, which were calculated without accounting for the splitting cracks that all manufactured lightweight concrete beams developed after the prestress release on their lower side. Based on these tests, upper bounds were determined for the development length of the prestressed strands with a diameter of 15.2. mm for the three types of concrete tested. Subsequently, the ductility factors of the beams tested under flexure were determined. Despite all of the tested beams were able to develop the full strength of the prestressed strands and showed a remarkably ductile behavior, it was concluded that the use of these lightweight concretes is not recommended in the fabrication of prestressed concrete bridge girders because of the potential reduction in their durability and bearing capacity due to stress corrosion, which is a result of the splitting cracks detected in all of the produced prestressed lightweight concrete beams. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd.},

abstract = {This article discusses an analytical model that relates the transfer length and the prestressing strand draw-in immediately after transfer; the model is based on the elastic confinement hypothesis of the prestressing strand using concrete and/or confining reinforcement. Two expressions are proposed to estimate upper and lower bounds on the transfer length, which consider the prestressing strand draw-in and the transferred effective prestress. The analytical model and the proposed expressions are compared with the experimental results obtained at the University of La Coruña, in which precast pretensioned prestressed concrete members were fabricated from conventional concretes and lightweight concretes. abstract = {This paper presents the results of an experimental program developed to study the feasibility of producing prestressed concrete girders using lightweight concrete. During the experimental campaign, bond tests were performed in push-in (TL bond test) and pull-out (FB bond test) types of specimens. To-scale prestressed concrete elements were produced, implemented, and tested. The variables studied were the type of concrete, the test age, and the delayed effects of bond. The TL bond test allowed the behavior of the transfer length to be characterized, governed by the Hoyer effect. Equations have been calibrated to identify the upper and lower transfer lengths using the experimental results of this trial. The proposed equations delimit the safety boundaries of the experimental transfer length values obtained in the experiments performed on the beams. The results obtained in the experimental phase discourage the use of the studied lightweight concrete for producing pre-tensioned concrete elements. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd.},

abstract = {Vertical slot fishways are widely used and are generally very effective in ensuring fish passage. The appropriate design of a vertical slot fishway depends on an interplay between hydraulic and biological variables, since the hydrodynamic properties of the fishway must meet the requirements of the fish species for which it is intended. This paper presents a tool designed to analyze the efficiency of a fishway model according to biological criteria. The application can be used either in the analysis of an existing fishway or in the design process of a new one. It allows the user to choose between a wide range of geometric dimensions of the pools and the slot, and between different fish species. If it is being used as a design tool, it provides feasible fishway models sorted according to their biological efficiency. Considering the complexity of the hydraulic and biological phenomena involved in the process of swimming through a fishway, the tool presented here does not intend to determine an optimum design, but rather to establish an objective way for comparing different fishway designs, considering not only hydraulic aspects but also trying to quantify biological aspects of the target fish species. © 2011 Elsevier B.V.},

abstract = {One of the main issues in civil engineering is to analyze the behavior of materials in strength tests. Traditionally, information about displacements and strains in the materials is carried out from these tests using physical devices such as strain gauges or other transducers. Although these devices provide accurate and robust measurements in a wide range of situations, they are limited to obtaining measurements in a single point of the material and in a single direction of the movement, thus, the global behavior of the material cannot be analyzed. The proposed technique consists of the integration of a calibration process with a block-matching algorithm to measure displacements from images. This algorithm uses the similarity between regions in the images to extract the 2D vector displacement field from each point, and to quantify the strain on the surface of the material. The proposed algorithm has been designed to measure displacements from real images of material surfaces taken during strength tests, and it has the advantages of being robust with long-range displacements, of performing the analysis on the image space domain (avoiding the problems related to the use of Fourier Transforms), and of measurements in long sequences related to a real point of the material and not to a pixel position. © 2011 Computer-Aided Civil and Infrastructure Engineering.},

abstract = {The recognition of seizures is very important for the diagnosis of patients with epilepsy. The seizure is a process of rhythmic discharge in brain and occurs rarely and unpredictably. This behavior generates a need of an automatic detection of seizures by using the signals of long-term electroencephalographic (EEG) recordings. Due to the non-stationary character of EEG signals, the conventional methods of frequency analysis are not the best alternative to obtain good results in diagnostic purpose. The present work proposes a method of EEG signal analysis based on star graph topological indices (SGTIs) for the first time. The signal information, such as amplitude and time occurrence, is codified into invariant SGTIs which are the basis for the classification models that can discriminate the epileptic EEG records from the non-epileptic ones. The method with SGTIs and the simplest linear discriminant methods provide similar results to those previously published, which are based on the time-frequency analysis and artificial neural networks. Thus, this work proposes a simpler and faster alternative for automatic detection of seizures from the EEG recordings. © 2012 Elsevier B.V.},

abstract = {Over recent years, Genetic Algorithms have proven to be an appropriate tool for solving certain problems. However, it does not matter if the search space has several valid solutions, as their classic approach is insufficient. To this end, the idea of dividing the individuals into species has been successfully raised. However, this solution is not free of drawbacks, such as the emergence of redundant species, overlapping or performance degradation by significantly increasing the number of individuals to be evaluated. abstract = {Non rigid motion estimation is one of the main issues in computer vision. Its applications range from civil engineering or traffic systems to medical image analysis. The challenge consists in processing a sequence of images from of a physical body subjected to deformation processes and extracting its displacement field. In this paper, an iterative Block-Matching technique is proposed to measure displacements in deformable surfaces. This technique is based on successive interpolation and smoothing phases to calculate the dense displacement field of a body. The proposed technique was experimentally validated by studying the Yosemite sequence and it was tested in the analysis of strength test and biomedical images.},

abstract = {A method based on Genetic Programming (GP) to improve previously known empirical equations is presented. From a set of experimental data, the GP may improve the adjustment of such formulas through the symbolic regression technique. Through a set of restrictions, and the indication of the terms of the expression to be improved, GP creates new individuals. The methodology allows us to study the need of including new variables in the expression. The proposed method is applied to the shear strength of concrete beams. The results show a marked improvement using this methodology in relation to the classic GP and international code procedures. © 2012 Civil-Comp Ltd and Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.},

abstract = {In this paper, the results of a benchmark test launched within the framework of the NSF-PIRE project Modelling of Flood Hazards and Geomorphic Impacts of Levee Breach and Dam Failure are presented. Experiments of two-dimensional dam-break flows over a sand bed were conducted at Université catholique de Louvain, Belgium. The water level evolution at eight gauging points was measured as well as the final bed topography. Intense scour occurred close to the failed dam, while significant deposition was observed further downstream. From these experiments, a benchmark was proposed to the scientific community, consisting of blind test simulations, that is, without any prior knowledge of the measurements. Twelve different teams of modellers from eight countries participated in the study. Here, the numerical models used in this test are briefly presented. The results are commented upon, in view of evaluating the modelling capabilities and identifying the challenges that may open pathways for further research. © 2012 Copyright International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research.},

abstract = {In recent years, the considerable advances in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) allow its application to problems which could only be addressed experimentally so far. This paper focuses on simulation and analysis of fluid flow in the intake-outlet structures of a pumped-storage hydroelectric power plant, using the software package ANSYS-CFX. Two different models, one for each intake-outlet structure, were constructed and subsequently tested for the worst-case scenario (i.e., the maximum flow rate coincident with the minimum water level in the reservoir). It was possible to analyse the global 3D flow patterns and the velocity distributions, which provided valuable information about the hydrodynamic characteristics within and in the vicinity of the structure. Although experimental validation is required, the results show the potential of CFD models as a supplementary tool in the design process. © 2012 4th IAHR International Symposium on Hydraulic Structures. abstract = {Vertical slot fishways are hydraulic structures that allow the upstream migration of fish through obstructions in rivers. The appropriate design of a vertical slot fishway depends on the interplay between hydraulic and biological variables because the hydrodynamic properties of the fishway must match the requirements of the fish species for which it is intended. One of the primary difficulties associated with studies of real fish behavior in fishway models is that the existing mechanisms to measure the behavior of the fish in these assays, such as direct observation or placement of sensors on the specimens, are impractical or unduly affect the animal behavior. This paper proposes a new procedure for measuring the behavior of the fish. The proposed technique uses artificial neural networks and computer vision techniques to analyze images obtained from the assays by means of a camera system designed for fishway integration. It is expected that this technique will provide detailed information about the fish behavior, and it will help to improve fish passage devices, which is currently a subject of interest in the area of civil engineering. A series of assays has been performed to validate this new approach in a full-scale fishway model with living fish. We have obtained very promising results that allow accurate reconstruction of the movements of the fish within the fishway. © 2011 American Society of Civil Engineers.},

abstract = {One of the applications of Data Mining is the extraction of knowledge from time series [1][2]. The Evolutionary Computation (EC) and the Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) have proved to be suitable in Data Mining for handling this type of series [3] [4]. This paper presents the use of Genetic Programming (GP) for the prediction of time series in the field of Civil Engineering where the predictive structure does not follow the classic paradigms. In this specific case, the GP technique is applied to two phenomenon that models the process where, for a specific area, the fallen rain concentrates and flows on the surface, and later from the water flows is predicted the solids transport. In this article it is shown the Genetic Programming technique use for the water flows and the solids transport prediction. It is achieved good results both in the water flow prediction as in the solids transport prediction. © 2011 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.},

In these tests, information about displacements and strains is usually carried out using physical devices attached to the material. In this paper, the suitability of Computer Vision techniques to analyse strength tests without interfering with the assay is discussed and a new technique is proposed. This technique measures displacements and deformations from a video sequence of the assay. With this purpose a Block-Matching Optical Flow algorithm is integrated with a calibration process to extract the vectorfield from the displacement in the material. abstract = {Sensitivity and uncertainty analysis investigate the robustness of numerical model predictions and provide information about the factors that contribute most to the variability of model output, identifying the most important parameters for model calibration. This paper presents a sensitivity and uncertainty analysis of a 2D depth-averaged water quality model applied to a shallow estuary. The model solves the mass transport equation for Escherichia Coli, including the effects of water temperature, salinity, solar radiation, turbulent diffusion and short wave dispersion. The sensitivity of the concentration of E. Coli in the estuary to input parameters and the different sources of uncertainty are studied using Global Sensitivity Analysis based on Monte Carlo simulation methods and sensitivity measures based on linear and non-linear regression analysis, in order to aid modellers in the calibration process and in the interpretation of model output. The extinction coefficient of light in water and the depth of the vertical layer over which the E.coli spread were found to be the most relevant parameters of the model. In the shallowest regions of the estuary errors in the bathymetry are also an important source of uncertainty on model output. Globally, the combination of these three parameters was found to be very effective for calibration purposes in the whole estuary. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd.},

abstract = {This study evaluates the possibility of measuring the damage of the recycled concrete. In this way, two conventional concretes with a w/c ratio of 0.55 and 0.65 were designed. Based on them, six recycled concretes with different percentages of replacement of natural coarse aggregates with recycled coarse aggregate (20, 50 and 100%) were obtained. To take into account the high absorption capacity of the recycled aggregates, before using them they were pre-wetted for 10 min. The results concluded that scalar damage mechanics (based on the variations of the elastic modulus) and volumetric strains curves can be use to quantify the damage of the recycled concrete. The results from both approaches indicated that the damage to concrete depended on the percentage of replacement, increasing with higher replacement percentages. Additionally, values of the damage, that are quantified using the critical stress and according to the scalar damage mechanics, are given. © RILEM 2011.},

abstract = {In this work the stress-strain curve of the recycled concretes was determined by replacing different percentages of the natural coarse aggregate with recycled coarse aggregate (20%, 50% and 100%). The results made it possible to establish the differences between the stress-strain relationship of a conventional concrete and this relationship for a recycled concrete depending on the percentage of replacement. In this way, it was found that the longitudinal strain of the recycled concretes increases with the percentage of recycled coarse aggregate used. Finally, using the experimental results, an analytical expression of the stress-strain curve accounting for the percentage of replacement was developed. The verification of the proposed model equation was done by comparing it to the experimental data. The results show that the proposed model equation satisfactorily describes the effect of the recycled aggregate on the stress-strain curve. © 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.},

abstract = {Soft computing techniques are applied to a huge quantity of problems spread in several areas of science. In this case, Evolutionary Computation (EC) techniques are applied, in concrete Genetic Programming (GP), to a temporary problem associated to the field of Civil Engineering. The case of study of this technique has been centered in the prediction, over time, of the behavior of the structural concrete in controlled conditions. Given the temporary nature of the case of study, it has been necessary to make several changes to the classical algorithm of GP, among whom it can be emphasized the incorporation of a new operator that gives the GP the ability to be able to solve problems with temporary behavior. The obtained results shown that the proposed method has succeeded in improving the adjustment to the current regulations about creep in the structural concrete. © 2010, IGI Global.},

abstract = {The techniques using Artificial Intelligence are more and more widespread in different engineering fields. Specifically, those based on Connectionist Systems and on Evolutionary Computation have been applied successfully in the analysis of big experimental data bases which were obtained in civil engineering. In this paper it is presented an approach by means of these two techniques applied to specific matters of reinforced concrete. The application has a bearing on the analysis of the drying creep of the concrete under controlled conditions (in specimen). The data base from RILEM is used as the main core of the test set. This article shows the process that has been done. This process is divided into three parts. First the Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) technique has been used to identify variables that are "essential" to the phenomenon of creep. Then, with the results obtained by the ANN, an analytical study of the temporal behavior of the whole series was made. Finally, the Genetic Programming (GP) technique was applied. The result of the process described is an equation that yields a better fit compared to the existing ones in codes and international recommendations. In addition, the influences of the different variables in the phenomenon are analyzed from the "virtual laboratory" created by these techniques. © 2010 Taylor & Francis Group, London.},

abstract = {This paper presents a Genetic Programming algorithm which applies a clustering algorithm. The method evolves a population of trees for a fixed number of rounds or generations and applies a clustering algorithm to the population, in a way that in the selection process of trees their structure is taken into account. The proposed method, named DistClustGP, runs in a parallel environment, according to the model master-slave, so that it can evolve simultaneously different populations, and evolve together the best individuals from each cluster. DistClustGP favors the analysis of the parameters involved in the genetic process, decreases the number of generations necessary to obtain satisfactory results through evolution of different populations, due to its parallel nature, and allows the evolution of the best individuals taking into account their structure. © 2010 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.},

abstract = {Traditionally, the development of Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) is a slow process guided by the expert knowledge. This expert usually has to test several architectures until he finds one suitable for solving a specific problem. This makes the development of ANNs a slow process in which the expert has to do much effort. This chapter describes a new method for the development of Artificial Neural Networks, so it becomes completely automated. Since ANNs are complex structures with very high connectivity, traditional algorithms are not suitable to represent them. For this reason, in this work graphs with high connectivity that represent ANNs are evolved. In order to measure the performance of the system and to compare the results with other ANN development methods by means of Evolutionary Computation (EC) techniques, several tests were performed with problems based on some of the most used test databases in Data Mining. These comparisons show that the system achieves good results that are not only comparable to those of the already existing techniques but, in most cases, improve them. © 2011, IGI Global.},

abstract = {Differential evolution is a successful approach to solve optimization problems. The way it performs the creation of the individual allows a spontaneous self-adaptability to the function. In this paper, a new method based on the differential evolution paradigm has been developed. An innovative feature has been added: the variable length of the genotype, so this approach can be applied to predict special time series. This approach has been tested over rainfall data for real-time prediction of changing water levels on an artificial basin. This way, a flood prediction system can be obtained.},

abstract = {This paper presents the improvement of the EC-2 shear strength formulation for concrete beams without shear reinforcement. The method used is based on the modification of the Genetic Programming (GP) technique configured to generate symbolic regression from a set of experimental data. Starting from the EC-2 formulation, several points of the equation are subject to optimization, together with the set of restrictions that must be fulfilled, achieving in this way to control and direct the searching process. It is specifically pursued to improve the term of size effect, the influence of the amount longitudinal reinforcement and the bending-moment-shear-force interaction. For the development and checking of the models it has been used in about 1200 experimental tests on concrete beams from the literature. The four expressions obtained are analyzed in depth through GP and, finally, three expressions of great simplicity are proposed that improve, significantly, the shear strength prediction with respect to the proposals of the Eurocode 2 and ACI 318-05 Code. © 2010 Elsevier Ltd.},

This work describes a new technique that uses Genetic Programming (GP) in order to automatically develop simple ANNs, with a low number of neurons and connections. Experiments have been carried out in order to measure the behavior of the system and also to compare the results obtained using other ANN generation and training methods with evolutionary computation (EC) tools. The obtained results are, in the worst case, at least comparable to existing techniques and, in many cases, substantially better. abstract = {Traditionally, a great number of business applications were developed using the J2EE framework. This fact has led to the emergence of a multitude of tools, manuals, etc. that explain the different alternatives or features needed to implement them. The development of .NET Framework has resulted in a strong demand for the implementation of applications using this kind of architecture. However, the quantity or quality of the documentation available is far from the one available for J2EE. This detail is especially worrying when the main objective set is to reveal the concepts of framework from a teaching point of view. This paper describes the teaching approach followed to achieve the abovementioned aim, based mainly on a set of simple tutorials that show the technology basics and two complete applications (miniportal and minibank) in which the application of design patterns when dealing with a business application is presented.},

abstract = {Genetic Algorithms (GAs) are a technique that has given good results to those problems that require a search through a complex space of possible solutions. A key point of GAs is the necessity of maintaining the diversity in the population. Without this diversity, the population converges and the search prematurely stops, not being able to reach the optimal solution. This is a very common situation in GAs. This paper proposes a modification in traditional GAs to overcome this problem, avoiding the loose of diversity in the population. This modification allows an exhaustive search that will provide more than one valid solution in the same execution of the algorithm.},

abstract = {About 1% of the people in the world suffer from epilepsy. The main characteristic of epilepsy is the recurrent seizures. Careful analysis of the electroencephalogram (EEG) recordings can provide valuable information for understanding the mechanisms behind epileptic disorders. Since epileptic seizures occur irregularly and unpredictably, automatic seizure detection in EEG recordings is highly required. Wavelet transform (WT) is an effective analysis tool for non-stationary signals, such as EEGs. The line length feature reflects the waveform dimensionality changes and is a measure sensitive to variation of the signal amplitude and frequency. This paper presents a novel method for automatic epileptic seizure detection, which uses line length features based on wavelet transform multiresolution decomposition and combines with an artificial neural network (ANN) to classify the EEG signals regarding the existence of seizure or not. To the knowledge of the authors, there exists no similar work in the literature. A famous public dataset was used to evaluate the proposed method. The high accuracy obtained for three different classification problems testified the great success of the method. © 2010 Elsevier B.V.},

abstract = {Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) can be used as inputs in disease computational studies such as pattern searching and classification models. Schizophrenia is an example of a complex disease with an important social impact. The multiple causes of this disease create the need of new genetic or proteomic patterns that can diagnose patients using biological information. This work presents a computational study of disease machine learning classification models using only single nucleotide polymorphisms at the HTR2A and DRD3 genes from Galician (Northwest Spain) schizophrenic patients. These classification models establish for the first time, to the best knowledge of the authors, a relationship between the sequence of the nucleic acid molecule and schizophrenia (Quantitative Genotype - Disease Relationships) that can automatically recognize schizophrenia DNA sequences and correctly classify between 78.3-93.8% of schizophrenia subjects when using datasets which include simulated negative subjects and a linear artificial neural network. © 2010 by the authors.},

abstract = {Colorectal cancer is one of the most frequent types of cancer in the world and generates important social impact. The understanding of the specific metabolism of this disease and the transformations of the specific drugs will allow finding effective prevention, diagnosis and treatment of the colorectal cancer. All the terms that describe the drug metabolism contribute to the construction of ontology in order to help scientists to link the correlated information and to find the most useful data about this topic. The molecular components involved in this metabolism are included in complex network such as metabolic pathways in order to describe all the molecular interactions in the colorectal cancer. The graphical method of processing biological information such as graphs and complex networks leads to the numerical characterization of the colorectal cancer drug metabolic network by using invariant values named topological indices. Thus, this method can help scientists to study the most important elements in the metabolic pathways and the dynamics of the networks during mutations, denaturation or evolution for any type of disease. This review presents the last studies regarding ontology and complex networks of the colorectal cancer drug metabolism and a basic topology characterization of the drug metabolic process sub-ontology from the Gene Ontology. © 2010 Bentham Science Publishers Ltd.},

abstract = {We can define structural indices of polymer or biopolymer complex structures and use them in the prediction of new drug targets in parasites. For instance, Plasmodium falciparum causes the most severe form of Malaria and kills up to 2.7 million people annually whereas Plasmodium vivax is geographically the most widely distributed cause with more than 80 million clinical cases. Due to drug resistance and toxicity, discovering novel drug targets is mandatory; such as Protein-Protein Complexes unique in this pathogen and not present in human host (pPPCs). Additionally, the 3D structure of an increasing number of Plasmodium proteins is being reported in public databases making easier the development of bioinformatics models to predict pPPCs. In addition, some PPCs expressed both in parasite and human, such as DHFR synthase, play a significant role in drug resistance in both Malaria and Human Cancer. However, there are no general models to predict pPPCs using indices of PPC biopolymer structure. Therefore, we introduced herein new Markov Chain numerical descriptors of protein-protein Interactions (PPIs) based on electrostatic entropy measures and calculated these parameters for 5257 pairs of proteins (774 pPPCs and 4483 non-pPPCs) from more than 20 organisms, including parasite and human hosts. We found a simple Classification Tree with high Accuracy, Sensitivity, and Specificity (90.2-98.5%) both in training and independent test sub-sets and implemented this predictor in the user-friendly web server PlasmodPPI freely available at http://miaja.tic.udc.es/Bio-AIMS/PlasmodPPI.php. © 2009 Elsevier Ltd. abstract = {This paper presents the experimental validation and the application to a real industrial catchment of a two-dimensional depth-averaged shallow water model used for the computation of rainfall-runoff transformation from direct precipitation data. Instead of using the common approach in flood inundation modelling, which consists in computing the water depth and velocity fields given the water discharge, in this study the rainfall intensity is imposed directly in the model, the surface runoff being generated automatically. The model considers infiltration losses simultaneously with flow simulation. Gullies are also included in the model, although the coupling between the surface runoff and the sewer network is not considered. Experimental validation of the model is presented in several simplified laboratory configurations of urban catchments, in which the surface runoff has been measured for different hyetographs. The application to a real industrial catchment includes a sewer network flow component, which is solved with the SWMM model. The numerical predictions of the discharge hydrograph generated by a 12 hours storm event are compared with field measurements, providing encouraging results. © IWA Publishing 2010.},

abstract = {The characteristics of the flow in vertical slot fishways depend mainly on the specific pool design, i.e., the geometry of the pool. This paper presents the results of a study on sixteen different designs of vertical slot fishways with two different slopes. The flow field is studied using both a physical-scale model and a numerical model which solves the 2D depth-averaged shallow water equations coupled with a k- eopen turbulence model. Several hydraulic parameters, such as the average velocity in the slot or the water depth, are considered in order to evaluate their biological efficiency. Based on the results, it appears that the length of the pool is the main geometric dimension that affects the flow in the fishway. The numerical and experimental agreement is very satisfactory. © 2010 Elsevier B.V.},

abstract = {This paper presents an experimental validation of two widely used numerical models in urban flood inundation studies, the two-dimensional dynamic and diffusive wave models. Instead of using the common approach in flood inundation modelling, which consists of computing the water depth and velocity fields for a given water discharge, in this study the rainfall intensity is imposed directly in the model, the surface runoff being generated automatically. Both the dynamic and diffusive wave models are implemented in the same unstructured finite volume code, removing in such a way any differences in the numerical discretisation other than the wave approximation used to compute the water velocity. Two different methods for representing buildings are used and compared, the so-called building-block and building-hole approaches. Experimental validation of the models is presented in several simplified laboratory configurations of urban catchments, in which the surface runoff has been measured for different hyetographs. For this purpose, 72 experiments were undertaken in a rainfall simulator, including eight catchment configurations and nine hyetographs. Numerical results show that the dynamic wave model is able to predict the peak discharge and its arrival time, as well as the shape of the outlet hydrograph, while the diffusive wave model gives less accurate results. The experimental validation confirms that, when the geometry of the problem is well defined, depth-averaged dynamic wave models may be used to predict rainfall-runoff from direct precipitation data in urban environments. © 2009 Elsevier B.V. abstract = {Vertical slot fishways are hydraulic structures that enable fish to overcome obstructions in rivers. Depending on the target species for which the facility is intended, it is necessary to adapt the pool design to their needs. In order to do this, the first step should be to characterize the flowin the fishway. In this paper, the hydraulic characteristics of 16 designs of vertical slot fishways are studied using both a physical scale model and a numerical model which solves the depth averaged shallow water equations coupled with a k-ε turbulence model. A calibration or rating curve is developed for each design in terms of the dimensionless discharge and flow depth. Moreover, the water depth and velocity fields, and the circulation patterns in the pools are also studied. The experimental and numerical results are compared in order to validate the numerical model. The results provide useful information about how fishways can be modified in order to enhance fish passage. The agreement between the numerical and the experimental results suggests the possibility of using the numerical simulations as a complementary tool in the design of vertical slot fishways. © 2010 Taylor & Francis Group, London.},

Sensitivity analysis can be used in order to investigate the robustness of model predictions, as well as to identify the most important parameters for model calibration, providing information about the factors that mostly contribute to the output variability. This paper presents the application of a 2D water quality model to a shallow estuary. The model was developed by the authors and solves the mass transport equations for the Escherichia Coli concentration, including the effects of water temperature, salinity, solar radiation and turbulent diffusion. The sensitivity of the concentration of Escherichia Coli in the estuary to input data is analyzed, and the most sensitive parameters are identified in order to aid modellers in the calibration process, in the definition of model output uncertainties, and in the interpretation of the numerical results. © 2010 Taylor & Francis Group, London.},

abstract = {The aim of this research was to determine the behavior of recycled concrete in response to the phenomenon of shear transfer. To perform it, a conventional control concrete and a concrete with 50% recycled coarse aggregate were designed. An additional goal was to shed light on how this behavior is modified with a pozzolanic addition, silica fume. Therefore, two types of concrete were designed, a conventional and a recycled concrete, both made with 8% of silica fume. In conclusion, a reduction of shear friction capacity was observed in recycled concretes, considerably higher in the case of the specimen without reinforcement. The addition of silica fume improved the behavior of recycled concretes. The results obtained were compared with the formulations of the different authors. In all cases, these were found to be conservative. However, the safety margins offered by recycled concretes are lower than those obtained with conventional concretes.},

abstract = {One of the key aspects that must be taken into consideration within the framework of Sustainable Construction is the management of Construction and Demolition (C&D) Debris. As for other types of waste, specific handling procedures are required to manage C&D Debris; these include reduction, reuse, recycling, and if all other possibilities fail, recovery or disposal. For public planning strategies aimed at the management of C&D Debris to be effective, it is first necessary to have specific knowledge of the type of waste materials generated in a particular region. After verifying that the methods available to determine the production and composition of C&D Debris are limited, this paper presents a procedure to ascertain the production and composition of C&D Debris, in any region. The procedure utilizes data on the surface areas of newly constructed buildings, renovations and demolitions, which are estimated from available data for recent years, as well as information on the quantity of debris generated per surface area in any type of construction site, which is obtained from recently executed constructions or from the ground plans of older buildings. The method proposed here has been applied to Galicia, one of Spain's autonomous communities, for which the quantity and composition of C&D Debris have been estimated for the horizon year 2011. © 2009 Elsevier Ltd. abstract = {Shear strength for concrete members without stirrups is one of the most controversial aspects related to ULS. Some excellent rational models have been developed; however, most of these models were too complex to be implemented in a code of practice. As a result, most concrete codes, as the European Code 2, are based on empirical formulations. Moreover, the EC-2 procedure does not take into account the bending moment-shear force interaction. In this paper, an improvement of this procedure is presented, with the main objective of predicting this interaction. The obtaining of the new expression was based on the use of Genetic Programming techniques. Two simple expressions are obtained, being one of them able to predict the bending moment-shear force interaction. Furthermore, the two equations significantly improve the adjustment with experimental results. © Civil-Comp Press, 2010.},

abstract = {In the present framework of sustainable construction, management of construction and demolition (C&D) waste or debris is stressed and its correct implementation requires a previous estimation of the precise quantities and detailed composition of C&D waste. This allows us to make an estimate of the production of recycled aggregate and to analyze the impact of its use in relation to the use of natural aggregate. Research of existing bibliography, the results obtained from both experimental testing and previous experience at construction works where C&D debris is used, enabled us to develop technical specifications for each application of the recycled aggregates. This includes recommendations for use, quality control specifications, and the maximum percentage of recycled aggregate that ought to substitute natural aggregate in concrete mixes in order to get admissible performances.},

abstract = {Among all of the Machine Learning techniques used for classification tasks, Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) have obtained much success in their applications. However, their development usually requires a manual effort from the human expert in which several parameter configurations (architectures, training parameters, etc) are tried. This paper proposes a new evolutionary method that evolves ANNs without any participation from the human expert. This system can be used to evolve feed-forward and recurrent ANNs. A real-world problem has been used to test the behaviour of this system: detection of epileptic seizures in EEG signals. A comparison of the results obtained using recurrent and feedforward ANNs to solve this problem is presented in this paper. This comparison shows the good accuracies obtained by this method (almost 100%). Moreover, these results show an important feature: the system tries to evolve simple ANNs, with a low number of neurons and connections (in many cases, the networks have only 1 hidden neuron). ©2009 IEEE.},

abstract = {A new measurement system for laboratory wave flumes is presented, based on the analysis of digital images by means of computer vision techniques. Unlike conventional wave gauges, the system detects the motions of the free surface along the flume section of interest as opposed to a point. A further advantage lies in that no sensors are necessary within the flume. The system is particularly useful in the case of wave flume tests of floating bodies, such as an oil boom-the motions of the model boom are measured without any sensors in contact with it, which otherwise might place constraints on its displacements. The new method is validated based on free surface measurements carried out with a conventional wave gauge, with excellent results. © 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.},
